CRAIGSVILLE – Elmer Thomas Oscar, 87, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday (July 15, 2025). Standing there waiting on him with opened arms was his beloved son, Robert L. Oscar, Sr., who went to heaven on September 28, 2024. Elmer is now sitting at the table with his Lord and Savior with a new body and mind. Dementia is no longer a battle for him. He won the fight with such a wonderful reward of Heaven.
He lived with his daughter, Sandra Oscar-Sprouse and son-in-law Randy, on the farm he loved so much. Elmer would spend countless hours sitting outside watching nature and looking at airplanes in the sky. He loved his daughter and would give her a run for her money at times as she was his caregiver. Elmer was always there for her.
Elmer is also survived by a son, William Oscar, who resides at Augusta Nursing and Rehab Center in Fishersville; a daughter-in-law, Tracy Oscar of Waynesboro; and a special inherited daughter, Nina Herron of Staunton.
Elmer was born on March 7, 1938 in Augusta Springs. He was the oldest son of Walter and Mary (McNeal) Oscar who are deceased. When he was born, the doctors told his parents he wouldn't live to be five years old. Elmer outlived all of his family in years of life. He was a strong, loving and kind man.
In 1960, Elmer married the love of his life, Joyce Corbin Oscar, who preceded him in death in 2010.
"Elmo," as many close to him would call him, loved the Lord, his family and working on old cars, both mechanically and body work. You could catch him any day mowing grass somewhere after retirement from Stillwater Worst Mills in Augusta Springs where he worked for 47 years.
Elmer only had a fifth grade education; however, he was able to read his Bible every night up to a year before his passing. He was both street and common sense smart. He could take apart any vehicle and rebuild it.
Along with his children he is survived by eight grandchildren: Kristi Cortez and Jennifer Hart of Maryland, Lisa Worley and husband Nathan of Staunton, Cassandra and Allison Oscar of Craigsville, Robbie Oscar and wife Cherrie of Staunton, Barry "BJ" Fridley, Jr. and wife Jamie of Craigsville and Jakeb "Jake" Fridley and life partner Chloe of Greenville. He is also survived by multiple great-grandchildren whom he was very close to: Diana, Lucas, Daphne, Drew, Savanna, Tanner, Owen, Rayne, Willow, Brandon, Colby, Sebestian, Nathan, Allison "Alli", Oaklynn, Briana, Oliver and Finley. They brought a delight to his life and he would laugh at them and their silliness. He also has three great-great-grandchildren.
Elmer is also survived by a brother, Ira Oscar and wife Dolly of Michigan; a brother-in-law, David Berry of Augusta Springs; and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Marilyn Campbell and Jean Berry; and a brother, Williard Oscar and his wife Julie.
Elmer attended Craigsville Southern Baptist Church with his daughter and son-in-law. He was a former member of Valley Independent Baptist Church.
You will never find another man like Elmer. He was the best father, grandfather and father-in-law anyone could ask for. He will leave a huge void in many lives and will be greatly missed.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday (July 18) at Craigsville Southern Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Tom Quick. Burial will follow in Miller Memorial Cemetery in Craigsville. Pallbearers will be Harold and Randy Berry, Darrell Campbell, Jeff Henderson, Steve Smiley and Lewis Corbin.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday (July 17) at Bear Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah for their extensive and wonderful care.
Condolences may be expressed to the family online at bearfuneralhome.com.
