Eva May Fickel, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, surrounded by family, at Mercer Manor in Aledo, Illinois at the age of 95. She was born to Alva and Carrie Morris Hileman on Sunday, February 24, 1929, in Grand River, Iowa. She married Hubert B. Fickel on November 11, 1947, in Donnellson, Iowa. Eva's life was a tapestry of dedication to her family and the communities she touched.
Eva, known affectionately by her friends and family, was a woman of grace and resilience. Her journey began in the heartland of Iowa, where she was born to a family that would grow to include five brothers and four sisters. She carried the spirit of her hometown throughout her life, instilling values of hard work and kindness in all her children.
Eva enjoyed quilting and loved horses and horse shows. She and her family participated in the Grand Entry ceremonies of the Fort Madison Parade and Rodeo. Eva and her husband Hubert enjoyed traveling the country setting up shows for Winnebago Motor Home Company of Forest City, Iowa for whom they worked from 1973 to 1992. Eva had previously worked for the W.A. Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison.
Her legacy is carried on by her loving family, including her son, Kevin (Betsy) Fickel of Garner, Iowa; her daughters, Tanya Clark of Elko New Market, Minnesota, Devera (John) Thompson of Tama, Iowa, and Linda Bowlyou of Aledo, Illinois. Eva was the proud grandmother to ten grandchildren, who in turn blessed her with 23 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Her sister, Elsie Jordan of Kahoka, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews also survive her.
Eva was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband, Hubert, who passed away on Friday, May 17, 1996. She was also preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters, with whom she shared a lifetime of memories.
Throughout her 95 years, Eva's unwavering spirit and loving nature left an indelible mark on everyone she met. Her life was a testament to the power of family, the beauty of motherhood, and the enduring strength of love. Eva's memory will be treasured and kept alive in the stories passed down through the generations of her family.
As we bid farewell to Eva May Fickel, we celebrate a life well-lived and a woman dearly loved. Her light will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew her, guiding them with the wisdom and warmth she shared so generously.
Eva will be remembered during her funeral service at 12:00 PM on Thursday, May 16th at Nichols Bewley Funeral and Cremation Services in Aledo. Burial will follow at the Aledo Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until service time on Thursday, May 16th at the funeral home.
Memorials may be left to the Eva M. Fickel Memorial Fund.
