In Loving Memory of Evelyn Pecherski
June 24, 1930 – July 20, 2025
With deep sorrow and abiding love, we share that Evelyn Pecherski returned home to our Lord on July 20, 2025. She left this world peacefully, surrounded by the love she so generously gave throughout her life.
Evelyn was the cherished matriarch of a large and loving family-a woman whose presence anchored generations. Her passing leaves an immeasurable void, yet her spirit endures in the countless lives she touched, and in the treasure trove of memories she leaves behind.
She is survived by her devoted brother, Kaspor (Mary), and five beloved children and their spouses: Karen Schornack (Rick), Mary Ellen McManus (Everet), Joseph Pecherski (Deborah), Dr. Gail Czarnecki (David), and James Pecherski (Amy). Evelyn was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Joseph Sr., her dear son Steven, and her grandson Evan. Their reunion in eternity brings comfort to those mourning her absence.
Evelyn's legacy lives on through her grandchildren, who brought her endless joy: Dr. Leslie Schornack, Bethany Wilson (Brian), Amy Walker (Charles), Adam Pecherski (Emalie), Laura Vaughn (Ryan), Erin Cohen (Jake), Lucas Pecherski, Mason Pecherski, and Athena Pecherski. She was also blessed with 12 great-grandchildren, and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins who adored her.
Born and raised in Detroit, Evelyn attended St. Charles and later graduated from Marygrove College with a bachelor's degree in education. In 1955, she married the love of her life, Joseph, and together they built a warm and lively home in Southgate, Michigan. Evelyn's calling as an elementary school teacher spanned decades, and her commitment to learning never waned. She went on to earn her master's degree from Eastern Michigan University-proof of her boundless curiosity and determination.
Even after her retirement, Evelyn remained a beloved mentor and inspiration to countless former students who continued to reach out and thank her for her guidance, compassion, and belief in them. Teaching was not just a profession-it was the lens through which she viewed the world. Her lessons, both in and out of the classroom, shaped lives and strengthened hearts.
Evelyn was a woman of fierce love, quiet strength, and unshakable generosity. Family was her everything. She made space at her table for all, and her home was a sanctuary of laughter, wisdom, and unconditional acceptance. Her legacy lives in the values she passed down-kindness, curiosity, resilience, and a deep devotion to one another.
She and Joe shared a zest for life and travel, exploring the world together-from the bustling streets of Hong Kong to the serene landscapes of the Grand Canyon. Some of her most treasured memories were family road trips out west to visit her brother Kass and his family, as well as cheering on her grandchildren at countless games and recitals across the country.
Evelyn's passing marks the close of an extraordinary life-one defined by service, love, and steadfast faith. Her influence will echo for generations, carried forward in the lives of her family and the students she inspired.
To know her was to feel seen, valued, and loved. And for that, we will be forever grateful.
