Fern Anelda Waldo, 98, born on August 12th, 1926 in Minneapolis, MN and passed away peacefully on March 15th, 2025 at Cornerstone Residence in Kelliher, MN.
Fern was the beloved daughter of Raymond and Pearl (Peterson) Leach and grew up alongside her 8 brothers and sisters: Douglas, Rayma, Rod, JoAnn, Gail, Elmo, Danny and Arthur.
Fern was married to Lawrence Waldo for almost 51 wonderful years. Together, they created a life filled with love and adventure, residing in Minnesota, California, Kansas and eventually settling in their hometown of Kelliher, Minnesota. Fern and Lawrence were blessed with four children, although they faced the heartache of losing two of them at birth or shortly after. Their son Randy passed away in 2016 and their son Tim, married to Judy, lives in Waskish, MN.
Fern was a devoted grandmother to her four grandchildren: Gwen, Scott (Valerie), Kevin (Jody) and Jay, all of whom reside in Kelliher, MN. She also took great joy in her great-grandchildren, who brought immense happiness to her life.
A lifelong member of the Grace Presbyterian Church of Kelliher, Fern found solace and community in her faith. Throughout her years, she held various jobs, but she was most known for her dedicated work delivering mail for the US Postal Service for over 40 years. Fern was not just a mail carrier; she was a friend and caretaker to many in the rural areas she served, always checking in on those along her route. She not only checked on the people, but she checked on the dogs as well, making sure they got a snack and were being cared for. Fern loved her dogs, Snoopy and Katie, as they were the best companions she could have in her later years.
Fern loved her family deeply and appreciated all the people who checked in on her during her later years. A special place in her heart was reserved for Beatrice Nistler, who did so much for Fern throughout the years. Fern always appreciated the Kelliher First Responders for their unwavering support whenever she needed them. A special Thank You also goes out to Cornerstone Residence as they treated her with care and compassion as she lived out her last few years.
Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Waldo; parents, Raymond and Pearl Leach; son, Randy Waldo; 2 infant children; 3 brothers, Douglas, Elmo and Arthur; and 2 sisters, JoAnn Folkerts and Rayma Heldt. Her legacy of love, kindness and dedication to her community will be remembered by all who knew her.
Instead of flowers or money, please consider donating to the Beltrami County Humane Society in Bemidji, MN.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church in Blackduck, MN with Dwight Kalvig officiating. A visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Kelliher, MN at a later date.
