Florence M Roginski ObituaryFlorence Roginski, 98, of Sayreville, passed away peacefully at her home on July 9, 2025. A lifelong resident of Sayreville, Florence was born and raised in the community she cherished. She pursued higher education at Rider University, where she earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
Upon graduation, she began her career in publishing at McGraw-Hill in New York City, where she dedicated 52 years to the company before retiring. For ten of these years, Florence was the secretary for Mr. Donald McGraw and later the business manager for Graduating Engineer magazine.
Florence's resilience was evident in the face of adversity- most notably in 1951, when she survived a tragic train derailment in Woodbridge, New Jersey, which claimed the lives of 85 passengers. Florence was commuting home from work when the speeding steam locomotive "The Broker" derailed on a temporary trestle, plunging down a 26-foot embankment. Climbing over people, Florence was able to jump out to safety. The accident is known as New Jersey's deadliest train wreck.
Florence was a lifelong parishioner of St. Stanislaw Church in Sayreville and a past member of the Sayreville Historical Society where she took part in the writing of the Sayreville History picture book (Arcadia Publishing).
Throughout her life, Florence embodied a spirit of gratitude and lived with an unshakeable appreciation for the preciousness of each day.
She is preceded in death by her parents Anton and Anita Skwiat Roginski, her brother Edwin Roginski and her faithful dogs Cali and Buttercup. She is survived by her nephew, Ken Roginski of Freehold and her sister-in-law, Dolores Roginski of South River.
Funeral services will be on Monday, 9am from the Maliszewski Memorial Home 121 Main Street with a 10am Mass celebrated at St. Mary of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in South River, followed by a burial at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Sayreville.
Calling hours at the funeral home will be on Sunday from 2pm until 5pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Florence's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital by clicking the following link.
