Obituary of Florine Mae Wheeler
Florine Mae Wheeler was born on March 26, 1924, in Boynton, Oklahoma. The daughter of Pauline and Ray Epperson, she was the tenth of eleven siblings. In 1941, at just 17 years old, Flo married the love of her life, Edward "Buck" Wheeler. Together, they moved to La Porte in 1950, where they built their home and family.
Flo worked as the manager of Edson Drygoods for 13 years, then enjoyed a long career in fabrics and make-up at Montgomery Ward for 21 years. A faithful member of First Baptist Church on Main Street for 74 years, Flo graciously opened her home in Fairmont Park to host weekly Bible study groups. She dedicated countless hours serving on the literary club committee, teaching Sunday school, sewing costumes for the annual La Porte High School musical, and planning trips for various senior citizen groups - always with a giving spirit and joyful heart.
Flo was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Buck Wheeler, and their cherished children, Marie Ellison and James Wheeler. She was a devoted mother whose unwavering love, guidance, and faith shaped the lives of all who knew her. Her family finds comfort knowing she is now reunited with her loved ones in the presence of the Lord.
Flo's legacy lives on through her son-in-law Clyde Ellison and her daughter-in-law Darla Wheeler. She will be lovingly remembered by her grandson Kerry Wheeler and great grandsons Kaz Wheeler and Jagger Wheeler and his wife Claire, and great-great-granddaughter Fallon Wheeler. Her love continues through her granddaughter Misty Merdian and her husband Charles, along with her great-grandchildren Sophia Merdian, Emma and her husband Caleb Dubiel, and James Merdian.
Florine Wheeler will always be remembered for her kindness, loyalty, and unwavering generosity to her family, friends, church, and community. Her life was truly a blessing, and her memory will be a comfort and inspiration to all who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund. Contributions may be sent to PO Box 2075, La Porte, TX 77572.
