Floyd Lurry Leavelle, M.D.
Dr. Floyd Lurry Leavelle, known affectionately to friends and family as Lurry, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025, in Belton, Texas, at the age of 84. Born on July 14, 1941, in Texarkana, Arkansas, Lurry was a man whose life was as rich and fulfilling as the many roles he embodied: a devoted husband, a loving father, a doting grandfather, a caring brother, and a respected medical professional.
Lurry leaves behind his beloved wife of 61 years, Donna Leavelle, who has been his steadfast companion through life's many seasons. Together, they raised a beautiful family that includes their children Joe and wife Melissa of Lorena, Texas, Randy and wife Susie of Belton, Texas, Sheila Bedichek and husband Doug of Coppell, Texas, and Jason Leavelle of San Antonio, Texas. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren Joey and wife Jenniza, Mandi Jo, Ben, Mia, Bailey, Braden and husband McCray, Brooklyn, Luke, Lawson, and Leighton. Lurry also leaves behind his sisters Joyce Fulmer, Betty and husband Bill Norton, Gayle and husband Danny Flanagan, and Lisa and husband Dennis Mauk, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will miss his gentle presence.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Eugene and Beverly Olivia Leavelle, his brothers Ray and Rodney Leavelle, and his sister Jane Scott. Lurry's educational journey was marked by dedication and a passion for healing. He began at St. Michael's School of Medical Technology in Texarkana, Arkansas, then pursued a B.S. at Southern State College in Magnolia, Arkansas, followed by an M.D. at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. His medical internship at St. Vincent's Infirmary in Little Rock was just the beginning of a distinguished career in medicine. He completed his Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, where he honed the skills that would define his professional life. Serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1968 to 1973, Lurry attained the rank of Major and held esteemed positions such as Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology Service and Chief of the Department of Surgery at the U.S. Kirk Army Hospital in Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. His military service was a testament to his commitment to his country and to the health and well-being of its service members and their families.
After his military service, Lurry's compassionate care continued at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas, where he served as an Obstetrics and Gynecology Staff Physician from 1973 until his retirement in 2017. His academic contributions as an Associate Professor at Texas A&M University College of Medicine furthered his impact on the field. Lurry's expertise was recognized by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1973, and he played a significant role in patient services at Scott & White Clinic and Hospital. His professional affiliations included the American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, and Bell County Medical Society, where he served as Secretary-Treasurer and on the Executive Committee. Lurry's deep faith was evident in his involvement with the Western Hills Church of Christ in Temple, Texas. As a Sunday School teacher, deacon, and Church Elder for 25 years, he guided many with his wisdom and compassion. His commitment to education and faith led to his participation on the Abilene Christian University Bible Department Advisory Committee. He served on the Iron Springs Christian Camp Board of Directors and he was instrumental in launching Alternatives to Abortion in Temple, where he served as Past President of the Board of Directors. He went on to serve many years with Hope Pregnancy Centers as their Medical Director.
A man of many interests, Lurry enjoyed the great outdoors, participating in activities like camping, fishing, water skiing, and snow skiing. He was known for his skill at playing horseshoes and his love for traveling, especially his annual Fourth of July trips to Lake City, Colorado. His musical talent brought joy to many as he played in multiple bands over his lifetime, including The Old Friends Band of Temple,Texas.
Lurry's legacy of service extended beyond borders through his participation in multiple international medical mission trips. His generosity and gentle spirit were hallmarks of a life well-lived, and his faith- filled presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. Today, we celebrate Lurry's extraordinary life and the countless ways he touched the lives of others. His unwavering kindness, generosity, and gentle manner made him a beacon of light in the community and a pillar in the lives of his family. Floyd Lurry Leavelle's memory will be cherished and his contributions to medicine, faith, and family will continue to inspire for generations to come.
A visitation for Lurry will be held on Friday, August 1, 2025 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Western Hills Church Of Christ In Temple. A private burial with military honors for his family will be held at 9:00 AM on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple. His Celebration of life will follow at 10:30 AM at Western Hills Church Of Christ in Temple with Scott Meyer Officiating.
Family and friends are welcome to come to Crotty Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Belton from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM throughout the week to pay their respects prior to his services.
