Gary W. Driver passed away suddenly on July 7, 2025. His unexpected departure has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Gary was known for his kindness, quiet strength, and unwavering dedication to those around him. He brought warmth and humor to every room, and his presence will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. Gary was the longtime owner of Amazing Fantasy Comics, a business he led with passion, creativity, and dedication until his retirement in 2023. Over the years, Gary became a beloved figure in the community, sharing his love for comics and fostering connections with both longtime collectors and new enthusiasts alike. His commitment to nurturing the store and its patrons created a lasting legacy, and his influence will be remembered by all who had the privilege of working with him or visiting the shop.
For over 50 years, Gary's greatest passion outside of family and business was softball. He played the game he loved until his final days, as a skilled shortstop, known for his strong hitting and effortless ability to field the ball. He was also a great softball coach, teaching both young and old, passing on his love of the game and his wisdom. Whether winning tournaments or playing for fun, Gary's sportsmanship, skill, and love of the game inspired those around him.
Gary is survived by his wife, Sandra Driver; his son, Andy Humbles; his treasured granddaughters, Shianne and Maia Humbles; his brother, Johnnie Driver, and sister-in-law, Francis Driver; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins, and his many lifelong friends-all of whom he loved dearly and who will cherish his warmth and kindness.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Wade and Pauline Driver; his brother, Jerry Driver; his son, Michael Krueger; and his lifelong friend, Larry Prescott.
A celebration of life will be held on August 9, 2025, at 1:30 PM at Monfalcone Field, Deer Park, 11523 Jefferson Ave, Newport News, VA 23601. Dress super casual, and if you have any softball gear, please bring it to honor Gary's love for the game. There will be food, laughter, and tellings of fond, memorable stories. Please feel free to bring a memento or a note that will be rested alongside Gary forever. You are also welcome to bring a covered dish if you so choose, though it is not necessary.
