Gary Hugh Easterling, a treasured husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on July 11, 2025, in Lexington, Kentucky, at the age of 81. Born on March 16, 1944, in Hazard, Kentucky, Gary's life was characterized by a strong work ethic, deep love for his family, and a passion for the world around him.
Gary's roots were firmly planted in the coal mining town of Leatherwood, Kentucky, where he cultivated a sense of pride and community that would remain with him throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his devoted parents, Ollie Hugh and Frances Calitri Easterling, and his brother Paul Gale Easterling. Carrying forward his legacy is his loving wife of many years, Janice Easterling; his two sons, Greg and his wife Jessica, Jeremy and his wife Ashley; and his adored granddaughters, Lydia, Everly, and Ansley Easterling.
After proudly serving his country in the US Army, Gary began a fruitful career as a Lineman at Verizon Communications, from which he eventually retired as a supervisor. His professional life was marked by diligence and a commitment to excellence, including supervising the installation of some of the first major fiber optics systems in the U.S.
Gary was a devoted member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, providing him comfort and fellowship. He harbored a love for tinkering with computers and electronics, always eager to understand and master the latest technological advancements.
A true World War II military history buff, Gary spent countless hours delving into the past, fascinated by the stories and strategies that shaped the world. His hobby of photography allowed him to capture moments of beauty and significance, creating a tangible record of his keen eye for the world's splendor.
Gary's sense of identity was intertwined with his humble beginnings. His pride in his heritage was undeniable, and he carried the soul of Appalachia in his heart wherever he went.
Funeral services will be at 12 pm, Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Lakes Funeral Home with Pastor Damian Phillips officiating. Burial will follow with military honors at Madison County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be on Wednesday evening from 5 pm to 7 pm at Lakes Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, 10502 Richmond St., Paint Lick, KY 40461
