Gary Paul Schmidt of Schaumburg passed away on July 11, 2025. He is survived by his loving wife Mary for the past 54 years, his children Andrew (Jennifer) Schmidt, Ed (Jessica) Schmidt and Amy (Gary) Geihsler, and grandchildren, Tyler, Kaylee, Justin and Eddie.
Gary was born and raised in Woodstock Illinois and graduated from Woodstock High School in 1966 and continued his education at Northern Illinois University with his masters degree in education. While at NIU, he met his future wife Mary. Gary then pursued a career in teaching and school administration for over 30 years serving at Teft middle school, Elgin High School, Niles North High School and concluding his career as an adjunct professor at Harper College.
He was an avid fan of all things Chicago sports especially his beloved Chicago Bears and he took great pride in coaching his sons growing up and assisting with his grandkids in their athletic endeavors.
Gary's pride and joy came from having the title of Papa to his four grandchildren. He loved making memories with them from playground outings to family vacations to seeing them participate in sporting events. If there was ever an event involving the grandkids, Papa wouldn't miss it for the world.

Gary and I taught math together at Harper College for many years. He was always such a great friend and ready to provide any help when the need arose. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with your family. He will be very missed!

I´m so sorry to hear of Gary´s passing. I taught with him at Harper College, where Gary was an excellent longtime adjunct and will be greatly missed! It will be strange not seeing him in the mailroom/copy room, or hearing his distinctive voice in the hall. I will always remember the huge box of pencils a student donated to the entire math department in recognition of the kind, caring, and competent math instruction this admittedly math-anxious student had received at Harper, particularly from Gary, whom the student mentioned by name in her letter. My deepest sympathies to Gary´s family. He leaves behind a great legacy.

I´m so very sorry to hear that Gary has passed away. I taught with him at Elgin High School and then for many years at Harper College. He was so very kind, generous with his support of his students and his colleagues, and always welcoming and quick to smile. Myself and those he´s taught with and tutored with in the DMC at Harper will truly miss him. Please let us know if there is any particular way we can honor his life.
