Madrid: Gerald W. Crump, 94, of County Route 14, Madrid, NY peacefully passed away on February 13, 2025, at his home. Services are under the care and guidance of Donaldson-Seymour Funeral home in Potsdam, NY. A memorial service and burial will take place in the spring at the convenience of the family.
Gerald was born on February 20, 1930 in Massena, NY; the son of the late Paul and Ethel (Cummings) Crump. He graduated from Massena High School, earning a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and a master's degree from St. Lawrence University. Gerald was an Army Veteran and 1st Lieutenant during the Korean War. After his service in the armed forces, he was a Future Farmers of America teacher at Madrid and Lisbon schools. He then became a guidance counselor at Massena Central School until his retirement.
On March 31, 1956, Gerald married Betty Stearns at the Scotch Presbyterian Church of Chipman. The couple resided in Madrid, NY after their marriage. Betty predeceased Gerald on October 2, 2023.
Gerald is survived by his three sons, Robert of Madrid; Howard (Elaine) of Alva, FL; David (Ava) of Vestal, NY; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Gerald is predeceased by his wife, Betty; brother, Clifford; and his sisters, Alberta Crump and Barbara Thorpe.
Gerald enjoyed vacations with his family, touring, and camping and Higley Flow. He also enjoyed gardening and tending to his lawns. Gerald was a 71 year member of the Waddington Masonic Lodge #393. He served as Master and held several district offices. He was active in the Masonic Charities and was a 32nd-degree Scottish Rite Mason. Gerald ran the fundraising campaign for the Madrid Rescue Squad many years ago. He was also a long-time member of the Scotch Presbyterian Church of Chipman.
The family would like to especially thank the Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley for their amazing support, compassion, and high-quality care.
