Glen Edward Bettis, age 94, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2025, at Carlinville Area Hospital. He was born at home near Waverly, IL, on June 15, 1930, to Melvin and Dorothy (Fox) Bettis and was a lifelong resident of Palmyra, IL.
A proud graduate of Palmyra High School in 1948, Glen dedicated himself to family and community. He married Jean Mabus on December 31, 1950, and together they celebrated an extraordinary 74 1/2 years of marriage filled with love and laughter.
Glen is survived by his beloved wife, Jean; his daughters, Marsha Gibbs (Rick) of Loami and Glenda Dennis (Leon) of Modesto; brothers, Lester (the late Joyce) Bettis of Carlinville and Norman (Sandra) Bettis of Bloomington; and sister, Wanda Ruyle of Orland Park. He leaves behind a legacy of eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews who adored him. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Doug Bettis.
Glen's professional journey included owning and operating Bettis Grocery in Palmyra and serving as the Postmaster of Palmyra for 25 years until his retirement in 1991. He honorably served in the Korean War and was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Palmyra, the Lions Club, and the American Legion.
A man of many passions, Glen enjoyed collecting stamps and coins, and was an avid bowler and card player. His love for tinkering was evident as he repaired countless lawnmowers over the years. Glen and Jean embraced a love for travel, including visiting all 50 states. They were "Winter Texans" in Donna, TX, for 36 years where Glen enjoyed playing pool, they formed lasting friendships, and spent many happy hours dancing to their favorite songs.
Glen had a heart full of love for his family and was known for his infectious laughter and warm smile. His kind spirit and generosity touched the lives of many. He will be deeply missed as a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Glen's life during a visitation on Thursday, June 19, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at Stults-Neece Chapel in Palmyra. The funeral service will commence at 11:00 AM with burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Palmyra where graveside military rites will be conducted by Palmyra American Legion Post.
Memorial contributions can be made to Carlinville Area Hospital in honor of Glen's memory and the care he received and sent to Stults-Neece Chapel, 349 E. Tanner Waverly, Il. 62692. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.airsman-hires.com.
