On the evening of July 14, 2025, Gloria Jean Johnson Gray peacefully transitioned from this life at her home in Crewe, Virginia, after a brief illness. A woman of unwavering faith, fierce devotion, and joyful purpose, Gloria's legacy is one that will echo for generations.
Born on November 28, 1951, in Nottoway County, she was the beloved youngest child of the late Cecil and Alease Johnson. She was preceded in death by her brother, James Johnson, whom she held dear in heart and memory.
Gloria was educated in the Nottoway County school system and proudly graduated from Nottoway Senior High School in 1971. Her love for the Lord began early, and she was baptized as a child at Mount Zion RZUA Church in
Blackstone, Virginia. Later in life, she became a faithful member of 4th Mount Zion Baptist Church in Crewe, Virginia under the leadership of Pastor Earl W. Walker, where she served with grace and dedication-as a Deaconess, Choir Director, Missionary, and Youth Advisor. Her favorite scripture, "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10), guided her heart and her service.
In 1978, Gloria married the love of her life, Milton Thomas Gray. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with laughter, love, and unwavering support. Their 47 years of marriage were a testament to true partnership and enduring commitment.
Professionally, Gloria broke barriers and lifted others as she climbed. She began her career at Petersburg Training School before becoming a Communications Dispatcher for the Blackstone Police Department. Her talent and leadership led her to the Nottoway County Sheriff's Office, where she became the first Black Communications Supervisor-a milestone she met with humility and strength. Later, she also served as one of the first Black Magistrates in the county's history. In all her roles, Gloria believed deeply in treating every individual with dignity and respect, no matter their path.
Gloria's compassion extended far beyond her career. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, caregiver, and friend. Her love for family was unmatched. Whether traveling to Philadelphia in her youth, recalling dinners at Aretha Franklin's home, or organizing family events, Gloria brought warmth, humor, and joy to every moment. She was the counselor you turned to, the friend you laughed with, the woman who always had a plan-and a prayer.
She poured her energy into the lives of others-supporting youth, lifting her community, and caring for her beloved mother-in-law. Her vibrant spirit, quick wit, and unwavering strength left an imprint on all who knew her.
Gloria leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted husband, Milton Thomas Gray; loving children, Takisha Gray-Smith (Tony) of Lawrenceville, GA, and Reshawn Gray (Sheila) of Sandston, VA; her precious grandchildren, Ethan, Grayson, and Jonah; beloved mother-in-law, Cloris Gray(the late Thomas Gray); sisters-in-law, Janice Johnson (the late James Johnson), Gwendolyn Ward (Joe), Vanessa Green, Deloris Mitchell (Frank), and Rev. Jacqueline Hawkes (the late Rev. Bryant Hawkes); brothers-in-law, Phillip Gray (Janice) and the late Earnest Gray; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and dear friends.
Gloria Jean Gray lived a life of faith, service, joy, and bold grace. Though her earthly journey has ended, her light will never dim. Her legacy of love and strength continues in all those she inspired.
