Steven Gerard Welter passed away at his home on October 14, 2025 following a valiant fight against cancer. He was born on January 23, 1959 in Bay City, Michigan to the late Joseph and Valerie (Stachowski) Welter. Steve was a lifelong resident of Bay City, and a member of All Saints Parish-St. James Church. He was a graduate of Bay City Central High School, and obtained a bachelor's degree in accounting from Saginaw Valley State University.
Steve's life revolved around the Bay City community. He retired in 2020 as owner of the Plum Harris Insurance Agency, through which he served Mid-Michigan for over 40 years. In addition, he was a former president of the Bay Area Soccer Association and the Morning Rotary Club, a former member of the Bay City School Board, the Central High School Booster Club, as well as the Bay City Country Club, where he loved spending time golfing with his buddies. Steve also coached Austin's BASA soccer team, dedicated to teaching the boys teamwork, sportsmanship, and love of the game. He taught insurance classes throughout Michigan for the Michigan Association of Insurance Agents, served as the Equipment Manager for the Central High School football team, and helped to organize rock concerts at Engel Stadium as fundraisers for athletics, band and the arts.
Steve is survived by his wife, the former Susan M. Notestine, whom he married June 23, 1990. He also leaves four children: Cameron Welter, Christiana (Steven Naylor) Welter, Austin (Mackenzie Carano) Welter, and Alexis Welter; three siblings: Joyce (Paul) Ryden, Karyn Giri, and Michael Welter; a sister-in-law: Joanna Welter, as well as several aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Benjamin Welter and his brother Joseph Welter.
The Funeral Liturgy will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Penzien Steele Funeral Home. Father Peter Gaspeny will preside. Visiting hours will be Friday, November 7, 2025 from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the Liturgy begins.
