NEWPORT, NY - Mr. Herbert Walter Haines, age 72, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 5, 2023.
Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania on April 13, 1951, Herbert was the son of the late Alfred and Rebecca (Shaw) Haines. At age 8, Herbert and his family relocated to Rising Sun, Maryland where he received his secondary education. He furthered his studies, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from Maryland University. A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he honorably served his country as a Staff Sergeant. On September 3, 1999 Herbert married the former Susannah J. Evans, a mutually loving and devoted union of 23 years.
In 1983, Herbert went to work for Merck Pharmaceuticals in Rahway, New Jersey as a researcher in animal health. Upon his retirement, Herbert and Susannah relocated to the town of Newport, NY where they have since resided. Herbert took a position at Remington Arms for a period of 11 years and retired in 2020.
Herbert was loving, caring, and kind-hearted. A devoted patriarch, he was a true family man. He formed faithful friendships, relationships that would, "in his eyes", become like extended family. He was a member of the American Legion in Newport, NY and his humanitarian nature led him, at one time to become an Emergency Medical Technician for the Kuyahoora Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Herbert loved to go out fishing on the Chesapeake Bay with friends and family. As a boy he was raised on the family dairy farm in Rising Sun, Maryland. He enjoyed gardening and target shooting with his son, Michael. He found joy traveling to Maryland to visit family members who were paramount to his life.
Herbert is survived by his wife, Susannah; step-sons, Adam Scherl, Evan Smith, and Nolen Smith; and sister and brother-in-law, Mary Elizabeth and Floyd Warrington. He will also be remembered by his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins; sisters-in-law, Charlene Haines, and Vicky Haines; and many special friends. Herbert held close the memory of his late son, Michael P. Haines; and his late brothers, Benjamin Haines, and William R. Haines.
The family extends sincere appreciation to the staff at MVHS at St. Luke's Campus for their care and compassion; the personnel of The Pines at Utica Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation for the personalized care provided to Herbert during his stay; Dr. Kathleen Fusco for all her help; and the Kuyahoora Volunteer Ambulance Corps. for their efforts.
A future Memorial Service for family and friends will be held at a date and time to be announced at West Grove Friends Meeting in West Grove, Pennsylvania.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave.
