A Life Remembered
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Howard Sidney Mason, who departed from this world on June 28, 2025. Howard was a person of remarkable character, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and love that will forever be cherished by those who knew them.
Early Life
Born on April 13, 1939, he began his life's journey in a family that instilled values of compassion and determination. As part of a family of ten brothers and sisters, the importance of family, self-sacrifice and the joy of doing for others was engrained early on. Growing up, Howard showcased an innate curiosity and a passion for learning that would guide him throughout his life.
Career and Contributions
Howard embarked on a career path that reflected his talents and aspirations, working in Kings County Hospital and retired from the New York City Transit Authority as a Tower Train Supervisor. His professional accomplishments were numerous, marked most by his ability to inspire and lead. Howard was not only an expert in his field but also a mentor to many, sharing his wisdom and encouraging others to reach their full potential. Howard was able to retire at the age of 50 and move back to Jarratt, Va and build a home. Beyond the workplace, Howard was deeply committed to serving his community. As a devout member of the Jerusalem Baptist Church his faith was strong and a model to many. He loved to share his passion for cooking and often did so for needed functions. His Shrimp and Chicken Fried Rice is a remembered specialty dish that left a lasting impression on all those that tasted it. Volunteering with community organizations such as Voter Registration made a significant impact, as well as through charitable efforts, advocacy, or simply being a reliable source of support to those in need.
Family and Personal Life
Family was at the heart of Howard's life. He was a devoted parent/spouse/and sibling], always prioritizing the bonds that brought joy and strength to their days. Howard is survived by Sisters Ada Jones, Thelma Matthew, and Brother Carroll "Curly" Mason and sister-in-law Lenore; his children Bartholomew Pulley, Karen Mason, Nadette Harvey and Patricia Hunt; Grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews who will carry forward his legacy and the values they imparted. Daughter Crystal Mason that preceded him in death. In his personal life, Howard had a wide array of interests that reflected his multifaceted nature. Whether it was fishing, hunting or working in his garden through nature's beauty, Howard lived life to its fullest, embracing every opportunity to experience wonder and growth.
Legacy
For all who had the privilege of knowing Howard his departure leaves a void that cannot be filled. Yet, his legacy endures in the countless lives he touched. Friends, family, colleagues, and acquaintances will remember Howard for his warmth, humor, and unwavering support.
He taught all of us the importance of kindness, the power of perseverance, and the joy that comes from living authentically. His memory will live on in the stories we share, the lessons we carry, and the love we continue to give in his honor. We say goodbye not with sorrow alone, but with gratitude-gratitude for the time we had, the moments we shared, and the love that will always remain. Rest in peace, [Howard].
