Huey P. Bushnell died peacefully at home Wednesday, July 30, 2025, surrounded by family. He was 90 years old.
A native and resident of DeQuincy, Huey was born, the eldest son, to Johnny and Ellen Bushnell on May 19, 1935.
On March 1, 1956, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Fallaw, asking for her hand in marriage the first time they met. They subsequently made their home in DeQuincy, where they raised their five children.
Huey was an accomplished carpenter and built many homes and businesses in the DeQuincy area for over forty years. He considered it an honor to earn his living in the town he loved where he was known for his generosity, goodness, and honesty.
In addition to carpentry, his life was rich with things he loved most: flying airplanes, reading the newspaper, hunting, fishing, and spending time at his camp on Horn Eddy on the Sabine River, which he constructed with the help of his family. Many treasured memories were made there with family and friends, from catching crawfish to frying fish and hunting deer.
Most of all, Huey loved his family and enjoyed their company. He was intensely proud of them and their accomplishments. What a life he lived. What a legacy he leaves. Huey is survived by Dorothy Bushnell, his wife of 69 years; daughters Elizabeth Massie, Diane Berry and husband Randy, Darlene Nortman and husband Randy, and Wendy Bushnell; son Johnny Bushnell and wife Lisa; bonus child Jason Genna; grandchildren Matthew Bushnell and wife Christina, Stacy Mitchell and husband Keith, Lauren Royer and husband Dustin, Megan Gallien and husband Matthew, John Michael Ashmore and fiancé Mary Hunyh, Robin Cooley and husband Garrett, Garrett Berry, Hollie Naquin and husband Bobby, and Tracey Bushnell; great-grandchildren Nicholas and Connor Bushnell, Avery, Elliott, Sadie, and Hattie Mitchell, Sarah Royer, Hayes and Caroline Gallien, River and Lainey Cooley, and Brighton Naquin; bonus great-grandchildren Jayden Vincent, Riley Cooley, and Maddox and Mason Naquin; his sister Catherine "Sweeter" Buxton and husband Butch; and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Doris "Sister" Leger and Laverne Taylor, and his brothers James "Little Brother" Bushnell, Roy "Pap" Bushnell, and Leonard Bushnell.
Family will receive friends from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., Friday, August 1, 2025, with the funeral service being held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. 4th Street, DeQuincy, Louisiana. Interment to follow at Masonic Cemetery, DeQuincy, Louisiana.
