Ilene Virginia Hays, age 83, of Limestone, TN, passed away, October 14, 2025. She was surrounded by love and was ready to see her Lord and Savior, Jesus, in whom she put her faith and hope.
Ilene was born April 8, 1942 in Guin, AL to John Pearson and Audrey Mae Humber. Ilene married the love of her life, Robert James “Buck” Hays on April 8, 1961 in Moline, IL. They returned to Buck’s home in TN to build a life together. She cared for Buck until his death in 2007.
Ilene was a retired bus driver for special needs children, whom she loved, and they loved their Mrs. Ilene.
Ilene was preceded in death by her husband, Robert James “Buck” Hays; her parents, Pearson and Audrey Humber; brothers, Melvin and Luie Humber; and sister, Charlene Baccus.
She is survived by her only son, Jamey Hays of Limestone; grandchildren, Jordan Hays (Kelly) of Bristol, VA, Beth McKay (Shane) of Lexington, SC; great-grandsons, Jaxson Hays, Grayson and Liam McKay; sister, Lurene Corkren; sisters-in-law, Frankie Humber and Delyn Humber. Ilene is also survived by best friend, Barbara Shelton (the Thelma to her Louise). She leaves a host of nieces, nephews and people who loved her.
Ilene loved reading her well-worn Bible, praying, listening to music, Elvis Presley, dancing, her family, and her Savior.
Heartfelt thanks to Hospice House Bristol, and the staff at Johnson City Medical Center, who helped during her stay.
Graveside services will be conducted on Friday, October 17, 2025 at 1:30 p.m. at Cherry Hill Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery in the Ducktown Community, with Rev. Ryan Shaffer officiating.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
