Raymond Jackson "Jack" Duvall entered peacefully into his heavenly home with his wife by his side on June 26, 2025. Jack was born on May 26, 1943, to Raymond Spencer and Osie Graybeal Duvall. He spent his childhood and teenage years on a rural farm in Ashe County, which he always remembered fondly. After graduating from Beaver Creek High School, he went on to attend Brevard College and Appalachian State University, earning both an Associate of Arts and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
Jack began his career as an English teacher at Northwest Ashe High School, where he also served as a guidance counselor for a time. In 1970, he transitioned to a new career as a claims adjuster for Nationwide Insurance, covering the Ashe, Alleghany, Watauga, and Avery County areas. After retiring from Nationwide, he returned to Beaver Creek High School to teach English again. He also taught computer science, carpentry, and served as the yearbook sponsor. He concluded his teaching career at Ashe County High School as a photography teacher.
In his retirement, Jack enjoyed working alongside his wife, Emily, in their landscape construction and garden center business. He loved maintaining his vegetable garden and lawn. He had a passion for reading, photography, computers, and woodworking. He will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and as a gentle soul.
Jack is survived by his wife of 58 years, Emily Lewis Duvall, his son Lyndell and wife Michaela of Fleetwood, and his daughter Alanna Dingus and her husband Bill of Nickelsville, Virginia. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Lenora Chandler and her husband Dillon, Zebulon Duvall and his partner Mickenzie, Emma Dingus, Karey Duvall, and Abel Dingus. Also surviving are brothers Joe Duvall and his wife Sharon of Jefferson, and John Duvall and partner Kim of Comer's Rock Virginia. He was preceded in death by his brother James and his wife Thelma Duvall. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Home Instead, Medi-Home Health, Cranberry House of Newland, Hospice and Boone Family Funeral Home for their care and compassion. At this time, no services are planned, but a private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to hospice or to www.teachforamerica.org (1-800-832-1230 Ext.8GIVE).
