James Robert Jones, 92, of Bethel, Kentucky passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at the Life Care Center in Morehead. He was born on August 1, 1932, in Marion, Indiana, to the late George Wilburn Jones and Fanny Mae Walton Jones. He was a man who lived a life filled with service, humor, and a deep commitment to his community.
As the owner and operator of JR Jones Service Station, JR was a familiar face on the roads in the area, where he also ran a wrecker service and spent many years driving a dump truck.
JR's commitment to his community extended beyond his business endeavors. He proudly served as the Chief of the Bethel Fire Department for an impressive forty-six years, embodying the spirit of service and leadership. His passion for helping others was further evidenced in his enjoyment of being at the fire department, participating in dirt track racing, and attending bluegrass festivals, pursuits that brought him much joy throughout his life.
In addition to his parents, JR is preceded in death by his beloved wife of seventy-three years, Betty K. Jones, his daughter, Charlotte Ann Jones Snapp, his nephew, Mark Morris.
He is survived by two granddaughters, Lila Beth Willoughby (Jimmy) of Carlisle, Kentucky, and Garla Hart (Jason) of Bethel, along with three great-grandchildren: Savannah Bates, Timothy "Andrew" Roberts, and Holly Bates Snowden. His legacy also includes three great-great-grandchildren, Jamie Roberts, Oval Snowden II, and Laynee Hammond, who brought him immense pride and joy. Additionally, he is survived by his sister Norma Morris (Richard) of Upland, Indiana, as well as several nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory.
Visitation for James Robert Jones will take place on Friday, July 11, 2025, from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at the Michael R Gray Funeral Home in Owingsville, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM with Bro. Ike France officiating. Burial will follow at Longview Cemetery at Bethel.
In lieu of flowers contributions are suggested to Life Care Center Activity Department at 933 N. Tolliver Rd. Morehead, Kentucky 40351.
Pallbearers include Tony Thompson, Danny Vice, Jason Vice, Jason Hart, Mark Hobbs, Andrew Roberts and Patrick Zalone.
Honorary Pallbearers include, The Bethel Fire Department, Brandon Green, Steve Hobbs and Barry Hobbs.
The Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Owingsville is caring for all the arrangements for JR Jones.
