Born in Rexburg, Idaho, to the late Ferd Robert and Mary Lucille Mathie, James was raised in both Idaho and Utah. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as a Military Police Officer during the Vietnam Era. While stationed at a radar site in New Jersey, he decided to make the state his permanent home.
James went on to serve as a Police Officer with the Wharton Police Department, dedicating 27 years to the community before retiring in 2009.
In retirement, James enjoyed traveling and exploring new places. He found joy in annually returning to the landscapes where he grew up out west.
He was predeceased by three brothers: Robert , Gene , and Ronnie Mathie.
He is survived by his wife Patricia; two children: James D. Mathie Jr. (Virginia) and Sherri Clemente (Helio); two grandchildren: Madison and Tyler; four siblings: William Mathie, La Vere Mathie, Lela Hepner, and Ellen Hedin; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, August 25, 2025 from 4:00 - 7:00PM at the Morgan Funeral Home, 31 Main St, Netcong, NJ 07857. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home, doors open at 10:30AM. Interment will follow at Stanhope Union Cemetery.
