James G. Richards passed away from an unexpected stroke on May 25, 2025 near Kneeland, California. A family man, and lover of guitars, food, friendship, and old-fashioned hard work, he was surrounded by his loved ones.
A nomad in spirit, James left an indelible mark wherever he went. He grew up in central Maine, a beloved son to Anita and Andrew (deceased) and middle sibling to Andrew ("Chop") and Caitlin. His adventuring took him from military bases in Germany to bear camps in rural Maine, and from professional kitchens in Texas and Iowa to his latest home base in Northern California. James's greatest adventure was in his chosen roles of husband and father: he met the love of his life, Emily, in the spring of 2004. Together they raised the pride of their lives, their son Glenn.
James lived to serve. As Resident District Manager for Chartwell's at Cal Poly Humboldt, he was always quick to lend a helping hand. He modeled teamwork and mutual respect: his many promotions and team-bestowed awards testify to how he led with strength and conviction. To his colleagues, family, and friends, James will be forever remembered as a fiercely loyal and generous provider.
"Jimmy BigTime" was also here for a good time. He loved 80s Rock, shiny Rolexes, quality Bourbons, and a late night watching fights or soccer on TV. Projects around his property brought him a sense of purpose and pride. James loved to get a laugh out of others: his ability to land a joke (clean or otherwise!) will be remembered by all those who were able to laugh in his company.
James is survived by his wife Emily Richards, son Glenn Richards, mother Anita Collins Rocksvold, brother Andrew Richards, and sister Caitlin Libby, along with a loving step family. He is predeceased in death by his father, Andrew Richards.
His life will be celebrated at Goble's Chapel in Fortuna, California on May 30, 2025 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to an organization meaningful to James: The Betty Kwan Chinn Day Center.

My sincere condolences to James family and friends. I work for Compass Group at the Corporate office in NC. I worked with James many years ago when he was with Eurest. We recently exchanged a work related email not too long ago and he remembered me. James was always such a pleasant person to work with. I am in such disbelief by his passing. Life is too short. Love and appreciate everyone that is close to you.

James was a good soul. He knew how to read a room which made him an amazing asset at the Cal Poly Humboldt venues he supervised. Due to his sincere welcoming personality I had planned on staying in touch with him now that I'm retiring from CPH. I will miss you James. Even now I can see you smiling in my minds eye.

I´ll never forget you James. Thanks for helping me in all my career endeavors over the years. Thanks for helping me believe in myself. You were a cheerleader to everyone you came in contact with. You always found opportunity where others could not see it. You will be greatly missed.

I went all through school and graduated with Jay. I spent a lot of time with him and his family in Caratunk in my early high school years and had a lot of good times and laughs with them all especially Jay. I was there when he 1st found his love for guitars & the very 1st thing he learned to play was the opening to Sweet Child O' Mine by Guns N' Roses, I think he wore that 1st guitar out playing that (lol). Jay's travels may have taken him around the world but to all of us up here in small town Bingham/Moscow/Caratunk Maine area Jay will always be a hometown boy. Jay was a good friend and always fun to be around. He is going to be sadly missed by everyone that knew him. My deepest sympathy to his whole family. I didn't know his wife & son: but to all of you, Anita, Chopper & Caitlin who I know well, my heart breaks for you as I know there is a void there that can never be filled. Just take a little peace in knowing that Jay's presence will always be with you everyday in some form or another no matter what you may be doing. I know I as well as all of our other classmates are going to miss Jay very much. Sincerely, Joey McKenzie
