James "Big Jim" William Thornton, 81, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. James was a loving husband, devoted father, big brother, father figure, a cool uncle, and most of all a great friend.
He served in the US Army from February 1967 to February 1969 with honorable discharge. During his service time he went to war in Vietnam.
He was born on May 5, 1944 in Louisville, Kentucky to William and Hattie (Davis) Thornton. He is preceded in death by his Father, William Henry Thornton, Mother, Hattie Bell Davis-Thornton, Wife of 51 years, Fannie Mae Thornton, Brother, Victor Thornton, Sister, Geneva Thornton.
James is survived by his loving daughter, Tonya Faye (Doran) Thornton-Thompson; Brother, Alex (Johnetta) Thornton; Sisters-In-Law, Doris Lee and Mary Thornton, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends whom he loved dearly.
Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Monday, October 13, 2025 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Southwest Louisville Chapel, (10304 Dixie Hwy). His Celebration of Life Service will be at 1:00 pm on Monday, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Southwest Louisville Chapel with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens in Mount Washington, Kentucky.
