Janis Herndon Hicks Manos Obituary

Janis Herndon Hicks Manos, daughter to Helen & James Hicks, was a native San Diegan. Jan attended San Diego High School and San Diego State University. While at SDSU she met and married, John W. Manos Sr. Jan returned to SDSU where she earned a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Speech Arts & Drama, and Masters Degree in Theatre Production and earned her teaching credential. Jan taught Theatre Arts at Grossmont High school for one year. Went on to Poway High School teaching drama for 20 years. Jan was instrumental in the development of the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, was recognized for her efforts having the stage named in her honor! Jan loved teaching and loved her students who affectionately called her "Drama Mama".
An icon in the San Diego theatre community, acted directed, wrote, and produced. Jan's credits include the Old Globe theatre, Cassius Carter theatre, Lawrence Welk theatre, and the Poway Center for the Performing Arts to name a few. Jan spearheaded saving and the restoration of the Balboa Theatre, which was built by her grandfather Robert E. Hicks. She served as President of the Balboa Theatre Foundation, and honored as "Chairman Emerita" of the BTF. Jan was married to her beloved husband John for 51 years, had two sons, five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Jan was all about theatre but above all an amazing wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and great grandmother. Janma, as she was called by her family, passed away peacefully at her home. Pre-deceased by her Husband John, and Grandson Caylin, Jan is survived by her two sons, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Jan was deeply loved by family, and friends, and will be missed missed by everyone whose life she touched.

Viewing and Trisagion 5:00pm to 7:30pm.
Refreshments will be served immediately after.
Monday, August 4th
Funeral service at Saint Gregory of Nyssa Greek Orthodox Church at 11:30am, and conclude by 12:30 pm.
We will immediately proceed to graveside service at:
Glenn Abbey Mortuary
3838 Bonita Road. Bonita, CA 91902
Graveside service to begin at 2:00pm.
Upon completion of graveside services we will return to Saint Gregory of Nyssa Church for a 3:00pm to 6:00pm post service mercy meal.
