Jaynice Barbara Luckey
June 27, 1934 – July 6, 2025
Jaynice Barbara (Demmer) Luckey of
Bakersfield, California, age 91 passed away peacefully on July 6, 2025. She was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin on June 27, 1934, to Floyd and Halycian Demmer. Jaynice grew up in Gotham, Wisconsin working in the Demmer Family Business which included a restaurant, lodging, and vehicle service station. She also spent a great deal of time with her grandparents next door at the Demmer Family Farm. She attended high school in Richland Center, Wisconsin.
After high school, Jaynice attended the University of Wisconsin, Platteville. It was there she met the love of her life, Larry Luckey. The two were married September 29, 1956, and enjoyed more than 60 years of marriage together.
At the beginning of their married life, Jayn and Larry farmed in Wisconsin and had their first two children Desiree Dawn (Desi) and Larry Lee (Lee). In 1968 they moved to Galva Illinois where their two younger children were born, Jana Jean (JJ) and Richard Charles. Larry's job opportunities moved the family to many places over the years and Jayn always found work to help support the family as they raised their kids and kept up with all their busy family activities.
During her working years, Jayn did accountancy work and held many retail jobs. In 1982, Jayn and Larry moved to Santa Barbara, California where she worked at Robinson's Department Store and managed the fur salon. In 1988, Jayn and Larry moved to
Bakersfield, California. Soon after, Larry's work took them back home to Wisconsin, where they lived in Madison for many years. Jayn often said these were some of the happiest years of her life. They lived close to their son Lee and his family and their daughter Desi. Jayn worked in a beautiful women's clothing store then took a job at Sears Department Store while living in Madison.
When Larry retired, they moved back to
Bakersfield, California. The weather was milder for retirement, and they would be close to their daughter JJ and family. Jayn continued to work for Sears in Bakersfield until her retirement. In all the moves Jayn and Larry made across the country, they did a wonderful job of keeping in touch with family and friends.
In her senior years, Jayn was devoted to her church, Lutheran Church of Prayer. Jayn worked in the church preschool cooking for the children. She was involved in SAMS and the supper clubs at LCOP as well. She loved to cook and enjoyed helping to prepare Lent and Advent dinners. In addition, she helped with the annual Basque Dinners that she and Larry enjoyed so much. Her church and the people that attended LCOP brought her much happiness. She was so grateful for those friendships that she and Larry had made.
Jayn treasured family, friends, and her Green Bay Packers. She loved food, music, dancing and a good beer. She enjoyed years of boating even though she didn't swim; some of the best Luckey Family memories were made on the lakes of Wisconsin and Illinois. The California Coast was one of her favorite places; she loved spending time at the beach. However, she adored her children and grandchildren more than anything. Her family was always her greatest accomplishment and joy in life.
Jaynice was preceded in death by her beloved husband Larry, parents Floyd and Halycian Demmer, her sons Larry L. Jr. and Richard C. and grandson Mason C. Davis. She will be missed by her surviving children Desiree Luckey Rohling, Jana Luckey (Chris) Davis, and daughter- in-law Peggy Luckey. She will be missed by her four grandchildren who loved her: Colleen, Michaela, Lauren (Shayne), and Olivia. Jaynice also leaves behind many nieces and nephews that adored her.
Services will be held on Saturday July 19, 2025, at 10:30am at Lutheran Church of Prayer in
Bakersfield, California.
