Jean Ann O'Donnell, a beacon of love and wisdom, passed away on July 15, 2025, in Richardson, Texas. Born on April 5, 1937, in Kansas City, Missouri, Jean's warmth and kindness touched all who knew her throughout her 88 years.
Jean was the cherished daughter of the late Louis Christian and Mary Laverne (Ehrat) Anthes, sister to the late Louis Christian Anthes III., and grandmother to the late Garrett Colin Foster. She found her lifelong partner in John Richard O'Donnell, with whom she shared a loving marriage since their wedding on August 16, 1958, in Denver, Colorado. Together, they built a family based on love, respect, and faith.
Jean's legacy is carried on by her husband, John R. O'Donnell; her seven children: John L. O'Donnell and partner Mandy, Diane P. O'Donnell and spouse Jere, Molly S. Foster and spouse James, Kristin L. Ahern and spouse Andrew, Daniel A. O'Donnell and spouse Ida, Glenn D. O'Donnell and spouse Michelle, and Colleen A. Huval and spouse Carl. She was a pillar of strength and guidance for her grandchildren: Heather Unger and spouse Tyler, Claire Martinez and spouse Rodrigo, Ryan Foster and spouse Brooke, Aidan Ahern and fiancée Ashlyn Sutton, Danielle Chandler, Brooke Herod-O'Donnell and spouse Aaron, Jude Huval and Renee Huval and Allison Valdez, as well as her great-grandchildren Sophie, Grayson, Lorraine, and two more on the way. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law Pat Ann O'Donnell, cousin Bill Anthes, and numerous Anthes nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.
Jean's commitment to education and faith was evident in her academic pursuits. She dedicated 11 years to studying with the Ursulines in Toledo, Ohio, in the pre-Vatican II setting, and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Loretto Heights College in Denver, Colorado. Her passion for teaching and faith led her to teach CCD, become actively involved in the Christian Family Movement and adult education groups where the Vatican II issues were initially presented. After moving to Dallas, she worked in the diocesan Family Life Ministry, where she earned the John Paul II certification. Jean's spiritual journey also included participation in RCIA and volunteering in the hospice program. She joined the Progressive Spiritual Group Open Window in 1993 and was a member of the Board. Most recently, in addition to the role of wife, mother of seven now adult children, she worked for a national insurance company in the Operations Department.
Known for her love of angels, Jean's collection was a testament to her belief in guidance and protection. She found joy in reading and had a fondness for potted plants, cherishing the beauty and tranquility they brought into her home. Jean's presence at family gatherings was a source of happiness, and her ability to remember every birthday and anniversary made each family member feel special. Her listening ear, practical wisdom, common sense, and strong beliefs and opinions were a comfort and inspiration to many.
Jean's life was marked by her loving and thoughtful nature. She nurtured her family with unwavering support and extended her kindness to friends and strangers alike. Her spirit, characterized by compassion and understanding, will continue to be a guiding light for her family and all who loved her.
