Jerome (Jerry) Hugh O'Mara Sr. passed peacefully on July 4, 2025, leaving the loving arms of his beloved wife, Sally, and his cherished children: Vicki (Mary), Susan (Tooti), Bill, Doug (wife Kimmy), Matt (wife Kim), Mike, and Jerome, Jr.
We imagine Jerry smiling as he left this world on a day filled with celebration and sound - a quiet soul departing amidst the fireworks of Independence Day. We trust in God's boundless mercy and love as he embraces his beloved Jerome with open arms honoring the deep faith, humility, and love that marked his life.
Born on September 13, 1931, in Carsonville, Michigan, Jerome was the son of Edward and Isabel O'Mara. He spent his early years on a dairy farm with his parents and nine siblings, where the values of hard work and devotion took root.
A proud and decorated veteran of the Korean War, Jerry served as a 2nd Communications Airman in the U.S. Air Force. He later graduated from Michigan Technological University and worked as a civil engineer for the U.S. Conservation Service and the U.S. Forest Service, contributing to numerous projects. Among his most notable achievements was designing and supervising the construction of the Lake Gunnison Dam in Goshen, NH - affectionately known to locals as "The Goshen Ocean." He also contributed to the restructuring of the Manchester Airport and many other projects throughout New Hampshire.
A humble man of faith, Jerry was a devoted member of the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was also an avid fisherman, bird watcher, and card player. Jerry enjoyed hiking, watching sports, and dancing, and was known for his dry Irish wit. He was a loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and Detroit Tigers. One of his favorite experiences was working at the Red Sox spring training facility during his time in Florida.
Jerome is predeceased by his parents and eight of his nine siblings. He leaves behind a legacy of love: his devoted wife, seven children, 43 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren, all of whom are inspired by his faith, strength, and deep Irish Catholic heritage.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mount Royal Academy in Sunapee, NH.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday July 10, 2025, from 4 - 6 PM at Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home, 42 Main Street, Newport, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held the following day at 11 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Newport with burial with military honors to follow in St. Patrick Cemetery.
