Joan (Moon) Barnes, age 96, of California, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 31, 2025. She was born August 27, 1928, to her parents, Bernie Moon Sr. and Frances (Fox) Moon. Joan married the love of her life, John M. Barnes in 1945. They shared more than 50 years of marriage, five children, and a lifetime of memories.
A life of love, resilience, and endless hospitality. Joan peacefully passed away at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy of unconditional love, unwavering strength, and a heart that never knew the meaning of "not enough room at the table."
Born during the Great Depression, Joan was one of nine children who learned early that family, love, and sharing what you have are life's greatest treasures. These lessons, forged in hardship, became the foundation of a life spent nurturing others with remarkable grace and generosity.
Together with her beloved husband John, Joan embarked on countless adventures across the country, always searching for a better life for their growing family. No matter where their journey took them, through the good times and challenging ones, Joan ensured that love and nourishment filled their home. Her kitchen was the heart of every house they called home and somehow, miraculously, there was enough food for everyone who walked through their door.
Joan's legendary Thanksgiving gatherings at their Arizona property became the stuff of family folklore. For decades, she opened her arms and her table to 35 - 40 family members, creating a beautiful chaos of love across the property dotted with RV's and makeshift accommodations. What might have looked like a ramshackle to outsiders was pure magic to those who experienced Joan's hospitality; a testament to her belief that love, not luxury, makes a home.
Joan is survived by her five devoted children, Mike Barnes, Peggy Cook, Karen Parker, Debbie Decker, and Andrea Santos who were blessed to be loved by a mother whose love knew no bounds. She leaves behind 13 grandchildren and countless great-grandchildren, each carrying forward her legacy of compassion, resilience, and the unshakable belief that there's always room for one more at the table. She is also survived by three siblings, Becky, David, and Dean.
Joan was welcomed into Heaven by her parents, Bernie Sr. & Frances Moon; and siblings, Bernie Jr, Donald, Keith, Anna Mae, and Phyllis.
Her family and friends will forever remember Joan not just for the meals she lovingly prepared but for the way she made everyone feel- welcomed, cherished, and part of something bigger than themselves. In a world that often feels divided, Joan created unity. In times of scarcity, she created abundance. In moments of doubt, she created certainty that love would always be enough.
Joan's life was a masterclass in what truly matters: family, love, and the simple but profound act of caring for others. She will be deeply missed and eternally remembered by all whose lives she touched with her boundless heart.
"No matter who was there, family or friends, there was always enough food cooked with love."
