In Loving Memory of Joan Jonas
It is with profound sadness that we share news of the passing of our beloved Joan Jonas, daughter of Sampson and Sylvia Collins. She left this world on June 3, 2025, at
6:46 a.m. Born on August 4, 1935, in Georgetown, Guyana, Joan was a beacon of love, resilience, and joy, touching the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her.
She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, cousin, friend, and an invaluable member of her community. Her wisdom, laughter, and boundless kindness will remain etched in our hearts forever.
Joan committed her life to service and community, contributing to numerous social and civic organizations. She was an active member of Jack & Jill, The Carousel Club, The
Links, The Couples Club, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She was also a staunch supporter of events sponsored by her alma mater, Bishops' High School (Georgetown,
Guyana). Her dedication extended to the auxiliary boards of the Michigan State Medical Society, Wayne County Medical Society, Detroit Medical Society, and Southwest Detroit Hospital. Beyond her primary role as a loving mother, Joan also excelled as an educator at a business college in Detroit. Her passion for exploring the world led her to establish JoMar Travel, a travel agency she managed until her well-earned retirement. She had an extraordinary gift for making others feel valued and loved, always welcoming friends and family with open arms and heartfelt advice.
Joan is survived by her devoted husband, Cecil; her son, Sylvan; her younger brother, Rudolph; her grandkids, Eleanor and Max; and an extended family of cousins, nieces,
and nephews, who will carry her memory with them always. She was preceded in death by her elder brother, Bertram.
A celebration of Joan's extraordinary life will take place on July 5, 2025, 9:00am at Holy Sacrament Episcopal Church, 2801 N University Dr, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024. A
repast will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests contributions be made to Holy Sacrament Episcopal Church in Joan's honor.
Joan's legacy of love, grace, and generosity will continue to inspire all whose lives she touched. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
