Longtime Cedar Grove Resident and Dedicated Volunteer
John H. Bannon, 75, a beloved resident of Cedar Grove, NJ, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 10, 2025. Born in Montclair, NJ, to James and Barbara (née Flynn) Bannon, John was raised in Montclair before making Cedar Grove his cherished home.
A man of quiet strength and deep commitment to his community, John devoted 58 years as a volunteer with the Cedar Grove Ambulance and Rescue Squad. He rose through the ranks to serve as both Captain and Chief, responding to hundreds of emergency calls annually-not only within Cedar Grove but also in neighboring mutual aid towns. In addition to emergency response, John dedicated a multitude of hours each year providing vital coverage at various standby events, including carnivals, fireworks displays, and community gatherings. Always ready to answer the call, day or night, John's dedication, selflessness, and professionalism earned him the deep respect of colleagues and community members alike. He was also always willing to offer a helping hand to any of his friends or colleagues. His impact will be felt for generations.
Professionally, John enjoyed a fulfilling 47-year career as an electrician, primarily at Anheuser-Busch in Newark, NJ. He was a proud and longtime member of IBEW Local 164. While proud of his work and volunteer service, his greatest joy was his family. He especially treasured his time with his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Pop-Pop."
John is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Jean C. (née Marchetti) Bannon; his loving children, John C. Bannon and his wife Diane, Allison Calabrese and her husband Frank, and Joseph T. Bannon and his wife Dana. He was the proud Pop-Pop to Matthew, Sarah, Justin, Anthony, Thomas, Ava, and Adelina. He also leaves behind his brother, Kevin Bannon, and his loyal canine companion, Bear.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday, July 14, 2025, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Shook's Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Avenue, Cedar Grove, NJ. A Catholic Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catharine of Siena R.C. Church, 339 Pompton Avenue, Cedar Grove, NJ.
