John Eugene Dodd, 72, of Mt. Juliet, TN, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, July 5, 2025, after a long and hard-fought illness, surrounded by the love of his family.
He was born to James Andrew and Mary Pauline Mann Dodd in Anjean, West Virginia, where he spent many days creating lifelong memories-fishing and playing outside until dark.
After graduating from Greenbrier West High School, John spent 17 years in the mines, working his way up from laborer to electrician, and eventually to foreman-a role he earned through determination, skill, and the respect of those around him. He was never one to shy away from a challenge. He believed in earning his way, learning by doing, and giving his best no matter the job.
After turning off his mining light one last time, John found a new calling in woodworking. What began as a hobby in his basement grew into a thriving, self-owned carpentry business. He was a self-taught craftsman, proud of every piece he built-whether it was furniture, trim work, or full-scale projects.
John eventually brought his skills to Nashville, Tennessee, where his reputation spread quickly. Known for his honesty, precision, and pride in his work, he became a respected name among contractors and peers. His craftsmanship lives on throughout the city-in local hospitals and banks, Belmont University, the Ryman Auditorium, and even the Grand Ole Opry House.
But John's impact in Nashville went far beyond what he built. He mentored and encouraged others, generously offering business advice and guidance to those just starting out. He believed in lifting others up, sharing what he'd learned the hard way, and always doing right by people. His words carried weight-not because they were loud, but because they were honest.
Outside of work, John loved trout fishing, sitting around the table with those he loved most, and reflecting on the fond memories of his youth. He cherished the simple moments: early mornings on the water, cookouts in the backyard, and time well spent with the family he held dear.
He is survived by his lifelong love, Peggy-affectionately known by him as "Peggy Sue"; his children, Lisa (Gary) Gray and Mark (April) Dodd; his grandchildren, Emma, Elijah, Carter, Andrew, Logan, and Jonathan; his brother, Bill (Carol) Dodd; and his sister, Mary (Jim) Rogers. He is also remembered with love by many nieces and nephews, extended family members, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Patricia Young, Juanita Davis, Sue Hughart, and Diana "Dee Dee" Hart.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in
Rainelle, WV. A service celebrating John's life will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 11, at the same location with Pastor Youel Altizer officiating.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to John's favorite charity,

Though he may have left this world, the things John built-by hand and by heart-will remain.
