John France Obituary

John France

November 24, 1935 - July 6, 2025

Arlington, Texas - John Bert France, Colonel, United States Air Force (Retired), passed away peacefully on July 6, 2025, at the age of 89. Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on November 24, 1935, he was the eldest of five children born to John C. France and Catherine "Kate" Haney.

John's early years led him to San Diego, where he met the love of his life, Nan and they married soon after. In 1955, he entered the Aviation Cadet Program and launched a distinguished 31-year career in the U.S. Air Force. He began in Air Rescue in Japan and served as a navigator before pursuing his dream of becoming a pilot. In 1964, he earned his wings and embarked on a storied journey as a fighter pilot, flying primarily the F-4 Phantom and the F-15 Eagle.

In 1967, while serving in Da Nang, Vietnam, John was awarded the Silver Star for valor in combat. Later, during his second assignment to Germany, he achieved a rare distinction: commanding the 525th Tactical Fighter Squadron-the "Bulldogs"-while still holding the rank of Major. His leadership and excellence earned him a rapid series of promotions, culminating in the rank of Colonel. He later served as Director of Operations at Eglin AFB, continuing to fly the F-15 with pride.

After his final posting at Langley AFB Virginia, John and Nan chose Texas for their retirement. John then embarked on a second aviation career as a flight instructor for American Airlines, retiring in 2003. In the years that followed, he and Nan traveled the world together, exploring new places and making cherished memories with friends and family. He remained deeply devoted to her and their family throughout his life.

Known for his warmth, humor, and generosity, John never met a stranger. Whether in uniform or out, he formed deep friendships and was always ready to lend a helping hand. The world was brighter with John France in it. Those blessed to know him will remember his wit, unwavering leadership, patriotism, faith, and exemplary character.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Nan; his parents; his brother Richard; and sons John Jr. and infant David. He is survived by his children: Catherine Highfill, Jim France (Amy), and Karen Hertberg; grandchildren: Daniel Thom, Kendall and Casey France, Jennifer, Matthew (Tara), and Tim Hertberg; five great-grandchildren; his siblings Gene, Gary and Shirley France; and many dear cousins.

A visitation with Rosary will be held on July 15th from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Wade Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on July 16th at 10:00 a.m. at Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Arlington, followed by interment at Dallas–Fort Worth National Cemetery.
