John Almon Mahaffey, 53, died early Sunday morning, July 5, 2025 at home in Georgetown, Kentucky. Born on January 25, 1972 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington to Shelia Robinson Mahaffey and John Edward Mahaffey, he grew up in Georgetown and graduated from Scott County High School. He was close to his family and remained near them throughout his life. John loved cars, especially his classic Pontiac Trans Am and GTO. He had learned at a very early age from his "Pa" Mahaffey how to disassemble and rebuild an engine. That skill and interest stayed with him for a lifetime. John attended Georgetown College and the University of Kentucky where he studied mechanical engineering. He worked as an engineer alongside his Dad on automotive or mechanical projects. John always enjoyed taking long drives and stopping for ice cream or a milkshake. John was a Christian and baptized at his church in Cynthiana, Oakwood Baptist.
John will be lovingly remembered by his parents, Johnny and Shelia; his sister, Liza Shannon (Marc) Chilton; his nephew, Ty Chilton, his niece, Sarah Elizabeth (Noah) Reese; his Uncle, Bobby Robinson; his Aunt, Judy Mahaffey, his cousins; Bobbi Jo Robinson, Chris Robinson, and Susan Mosier, his favorite cousin and friend.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Services for John Almon Mahaffey will be on Thursday, July 10, 2025 at Tucker, Yocum & Wilson Funeral Home in Georgetown. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm and the Memorial Service will begin at 12:00 with Pastor Doug Henry officiating. Burial will follow in procession to River View Cemetery in Beattyville, Kentucky, where the graveside service will begin at 3:00pm and Pallbearers will be James William Dunahoo, Shane Neal, Marc Chilton, and Wesley Evans.
