John Marshall Prewitt, age 67, of Cypress, passed away July 18th. He was born May 21st, 1958, in Austin, Minnesota to the late Thomas Edward Prewitt and Janice Marshall Prewitt.
John is predeceased in death by his mother and father, his mother- and father-in-law Baja and Bob Robinson, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and great-nephew Chap Robinson. He is survived by his wife, Kelly Robinson Prewitt, daughter Elizabeth Lee Johnson (husband Steve, daughter Abigail) daughter Melissa Ramey Prewitt (fiancé Luke Gauthier), and son Benjamin Robinson Prewitt; sister Stephanie Brown (husband Mike); sister Barbara Myers (life partner Jonathan); brother-in-law Steve Robinson (wife Jodie) and Robbie Robinson (wife Terri); nephews and nieces Joshua Myers (son Landon), Megan Adams (husband Seavie; children Grace and Brayden), Jessica Gaul (husband Chris; children Joshua and Abby), Jared Myers (wife Caroline; children Tinsley, Jackson, Tommy and Kash); Sam Robinson (wife Sarah, children Reese, Max and Katherine), Caitlin Robinson (husband Matt Poche), Laura Robinson, Tom Robinson, Cole Robinson (wife Meagan, children Cash, Conley and Camp), Chris Fenley (wife Lauren, children Ford and Levi), Rachel Mancini (husband Blair, children Violet and Lily) and Riley Robinson.
John was raised in Miami, Oklahoma alongside his older and protective sisters, Stephanie and Barbara. He was a proud member of the 1976 Miami High Wardogs! He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1980 earning a B.A. in Economics where his interest in student government and public service was sparked. John then received his MBA from the University of Texas and began his banking career that spanned over 25 years. John worked at banks in Austin, TX, Oklahoma City, OK and Houston, TX. He managed teams of bankers through mergers, integrating cultures, establishing new locations and growing bank assets. John's greatest enjoyment from his banking career was in building long-lasting relationships with clients and co-workers alike.
John transitioned from banking to the transportation industry in 2010, working as President of Tideport Distributing, Inc., a hauler of specialty fuels, until his death. During John's tenure, the company's revenue increased 150%. John thrived once again in building long-lasting relationships over the years, this time in the trucking industry. John served on the Texas Trucking Association since 2011, serving as Chairman of the Board in 2023. That same year John was awarded the TXTA Leader of the year, an award that truly humbled John. He was twice appointed TX Department of Motor Vehicles Board Member by Governor Abbott, enjoying service to the people of the State of Texas and, again, relationships among the board members and DMV staff members.
John's service was not limited to his career. He served as an elected member of the Faulkey Gully MUD Board as Treasurer since 2018 and was a board member of the Public Power Pool for 2.
John met his wife, Kelly Ann Robinson, while both working at First City Bank in 1989. They married on November 10, 1990. John and Kelly welcomed their first child Elizabeth in 1994, Melissa in 2000 and Ben in 2003. They spent nearly 35 years committed to each other and to Christ.
John was introduced to the notion of a need for a savior in the 7th grade by a Language Arts teacher and was baptized as a freshman in college. He followed the Lord for the rest of his life. John served in many church ministries over the years including children, youth, hospitality, welcome center, worship tech, deacon and Treasurer. John was a member of Cypress Bible Church for 28 years. The family is comforted in knowing that John's body is healed and his future secure in Heaven.
While John was proud of and grateful for any public or career accomplishments, his greatest earthly reward by far was in seeing his children overcome challenges and become responsible adults living into their God-given potential. He was exceedingly excited about becoming a grandfather and learned of Abby's birth on July 15th. Although not able to meet her in person, John was able to view pictures of Abby and hear her coo over the phone while in the hospital. John was also very excited about the upcoming marriage of Melissa and welcoming Luke into the family.
John was surrounded by family while battling Myelodysplastic Syndrome, subsequent to 4 years of remission from non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. The family expresses a special thanks to Dr. Zehra Kapadia, Dr. Sai Pingali, Dr. Carlos Ramos and all the outstanding caregivers and medical staff at both Texas Oncology and Houston Methodist. John credited the team for four bonus years after a successful stem cell transplant in 2021. Were it not for his journey with cancer, we would not have been blessed by countless caring and empathetic care givers.
Thank you also to the Coiner family for their grace and understanding during John's illness.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, July 26th at 3pm at Cypress Bible Church, 11711 Cypress North Houston Road, Cypress, Texas 77429 with Wayne Cone officiating. A reception will follow at the church.
Honorary pallbearers are Benjamin Prewitt, Stephen Johnson, Luke Gauthier, Steve Robinson, Robbie Robinson and Van Matthew.
