John O. Richards, affectionately known as Johnny or "Ol Goat," passed away peacefully at his residence in Apalachicola, Florida, surrounded by his beloved family on Sunday, May 25, 2025. He was 82 years old when he went home to be with the Lord. John was born on June 20, 1942, in Blountstown, Florida, the pride of his parents, John D. Richards and Lula Mae Ramsey Richards, who have preceded him in death.

A longtime commercial fisherman, John dedicated his life to the bay, where he found profound joy in shrimping and oystering. His work was not just a job; it was a passion that he pursued with great fervor and skill. As the former president of the Franklin County Seafood Workers Association, he was known for his steadfast commitment to the fishing community and was respected by peers as one of the best in his field.

He was a dedicated member of Living Waters Assembly of God for many years.

Outside his professional life, Johnny enjoyed the simple pleasures of freshwater fishing, singing, and playing the harmonica. Though he loved the water, his heart truly belonged to his family, with whom he shared countless cherished moments. His greatest accomplishment in life was the family he nurtured and loved more than anything else.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Janice Pearl Richards, of Apalachicola, Florida; their two children, Denice Sapp and her husband, John "Runt" Sapp Jr., of Apalachicola, and son John O. Richards Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Eastpoint, Florida. John's legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Tessa Putnal and her husband, Wes; Andrew Sapp and his wife, Reva; Jordan Richards and his wife, Laurel; and Chase Richards and his wife, Shelby, all of whom brought him immense joy. Additionally, he is the proud grandfather of great-grandchildren Kierstyn, Kylie, Mariah, Aubree, Conner, Ava, Levi, and Mila, along with one great-great-grandchild, Waylon.

John will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends, who will hold him close in their hearts as they reflect on his rich life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering dedication.

He joins in eternal rest his siblings, Glenn Richards, Willard Richards, Donnell Richards, Linda Cooper, and Penny Brown.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on Wednesday,  May 28, 2025, from 10:00 AM Eastern Time to 11:00 AM Eastern Time, at Living Waters Assembly of God, located at 1580 Bluff Road, Apalachicola, Florida. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM at the church with Pastor Scotty Lolley and Brother Bobby Shiver officiating. Burial will be held at Magnolia Cemetery in Apalachicola, Florida immediately after the funeral.

Though his physical presence is no longer with us, John's spirit will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. His love for his family and dedication to his work will forever be remembered—a true testament to a life well-lived.
