Jonathan Blake (Whisenant) Cornetto, age 57, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at his home in West Jefferson, NC.
Jon leaves behind his daughter, Sofia Kellyn Cornetto; his aunts, uncles, and many cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Barry Whisenant and Linda Ann Cornetto Whisenant, and his maternal grandparents, Carmen A. and Catherine G. Cornetto.
He was a graduate of Williams High School in Alamance County, North Carolina. A talented musician and lover of all kinds of music, Jon was also a gifted writer. His nickname was the "Whiz Kid."
Jon attended East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, for two years before transferring to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study political science and journalism. After graduating in 1994, he moved to San Francisco for an internship with Mother Jones magazine. During his internship, he launched the magazine's first website.
After several positions on the West Coast, Jon returned to his home state of North Carolina, where he worked in Charlotte and Raleigh for McClatchy Interactive.
On August 29, 2006, Sofia Kellyn Cornetto was born. From the moment they met, she was the apple of his eye and Jon's proudest life achievement.
He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of life will be planned in Raleigh in the coming weeks to honor and commemorate him.
