Judith "Judy" Phillips Allen, also known as the Queen of Everything, went to be with the Lord on December 27, 2024. Born October 11, 1947, she was a lifetime resident of
Newport News, Virginia, and graduated from Newport News High School, class of 1966. Judy danced her way out of this world with the same grace and humor she exhibited throughout her 77 years.
Judy was the kind of woman who could light up a room simply by entering it. Born and raised in Newport News, she never stayed far from her roots, ultimately choosing to make the same city both her birthplace and final resting place.
Judy met her future husband, Jerry Allen, in 1963 when he delivered newspapers to her front door. They soon after began dating and after 5 years they were married in 1968, together for 57 beautifully loving years.
A teacher by profession and a coach by passion, Judy shaped young minds both in the classroom and on the sports field, but her talents didn't stop there. She had an extraordinary knack for breeding dogs strutting through AKC shows, making four-legged friends as joyful as her two-legged ones. To know Judy was to experience a joy that was infectious, buoyed by her unparalleled sense of humor and wit.
In her downtime – though anyone who knew her would argue she rarely had any – Judy was an avid ballroom dancer, world traveler, and nurturing family woman. She managed to juggle raising a daughter and grandson all while keeping Jerry on his toes. Her parents preceded her in death as well as her brother, Monty and sister, Brenda. She leaves behind a loving family: her devoted husband Jerry, her cherished daughter, Kelly McLaurin Kendall and much adored grandson, Joshua Allen Brown.
A visitation for Judy will be held on Sunday January 5, 2025 at Altmeyer Funeral Homes Riverside Chapel from 2 – 4 pm, with a service immediately to follow. Graveside services will be held the following day, January 6, 2025 at 11 am at Peninsula Memorial Park. In the meantime, let's remember her fondly – perhaps with a dance, a joke, or simply a smile, the way she would have wanted. Fly high, Judy; the world's a little less bright without you, but heaven just gained one heck of a star.
