It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to Karen Mary Brunner (nee Rich), remembered for her quick wit, radiant smile and generous heart. On June 13, 2025, at the age of 81, Karen passed away peacefully at Vista Pointe Assisted Living in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.
Karen was born at home on May 1, 1944, in West Allis, Wisconsin, to Floyd and Rose (nee Schneider) Rich. She was their third daughter and quickly became known for her bold spirit and willingness to push boundaries.
After earning her GED, Karen joined the United States Marine Corps on July 9, 1962. While stationed in New Bern, North Carolina, she met fellow Marine William Hipp. The two married on November 26, 1963, and welcomed their daughter, Laurie Hipp, on July 29, 1964. The family returned to Karen's hometown of West Allis, Wisconsin, But the marriage ended in divorce on November 1, 1966.
Karen embraced single motherhood with strength and resilience, settling into a small upper flat on 96th and Beloit Road. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She explored a variety of career paths. She worked as a secretary in downtown Milwaukee, a waitress at a Chinese restaurant on Greenfield Avenue, and took on assignments through a temporary service. One memorable job was at a company that made Quality Candy whipped cream eggs-damaged ones could be taken home, much to her delight, a sweet perk she fondly remembered.
In December 1972, Karen moved to Germantown, Wisconsin into a small mobile home to be closer to her parents, whom she cared for until their passing. Her career continued with a third shift role of Addison Warren's Answering Service in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. Years later, Karen switched to a third shift position in the factory of Holiday Cup in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. Eventually, she joined Master Lock in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she remained until retirement, earning a well-deserved pension.
In the fall of 1985, Karen rekindled a romance with Bill Brunner, a connection that began in 1967. They married on May 15, 1987, and built a life together in Sullivan, Wisconsin. They found joy watching and caring for the wildlife in their backyard. After moving back to Germantown, Wisconsin to be closer to family, their love for animals expanded to include caring for neighborhood stray cats. Their last cat, Patches, was adopted from their own backyard. Karen and Bill remained happily married for 37 years until Bill's passing on April 18, 2024.
Karen leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience and compassion. She is survived by her daughter Laurie Kempke (Jeff Drott) and her cherished grandson, Alex Kempke. She is also survived by her sister, Carole (Mark) Wilde and preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Horst Schueppel and her parents Floyd and Rose Rich. Karen was a beloved aunt to seven nieces and nephews, with whom she shared countless treasured memories that will forever be etched in their hearts.
As we bid a farewell to this extraordinary woman, we take comfort in the enduring presence of her love, which continues to resonate in the hearts of all who knew her. She was a steadfast beacon of hope and joy, illuminating the lives of others with unwavering grace and compassion.
In commemorating Karen's life, we honor not only the remarkable individual she was, but also the profound and lasting impact she had on those around her. Her legacy lives in the stories we share, the joy she brought, and the quiet wisdom she imparted.
