Karen U. Schmitt, 82 of St. Charles, formerly of Bolingbrook, passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Saturday, July 12, 2025. She was born on March 23, 1943,in Cincinnati, Ohio to Carl & Winifred Schmitt.
Karen is remembered for her empathetic and giving spirit toward people who were less fortunate and made sure the wildlife who frequented her backyard never went hungry. Her heart was full of gold, and her sense of humor was one that could never be replicated. Karen brought smiles and laughs to everyone, always making time for each person in her life to show how much she truly cared. Her compassion extended to strangers as well-she regularly donated to St. Jude’s, animal shelters, and helped people living on Chicago's streets during her 2-mile walk to work. Her strength and determination were an inspiration to all who knew her, as she continued working and traveling daily to the city of Chicago well into her 70s. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who made a positive impact on every life she touched and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her two children, Mary (Alan) Kirby, and Al (Rhonda) Schmitt; three grandchildren, Jessica Kijak, Robert Kijak, and Andrew (Carol) Kijak of Illinois; two brothers, Jonathan, and James (Kathy) Schmitt of Ohio; A niece, Amy Schmitt of Ohio; and two nephews, James C. Schmitt, and Michael D. Schmitt of Ohio.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
