Obituary for Lawrence (Larry) Haag – March 27, 1945-May 9, 2025
Lawrence S. (Larry) Haag, died suddenly on May 9, 2025 from a fall on a hike in Moraga. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend of many,
Born on March 27, 1945 in Waukegan, Illinois, he graduated from Waukegan Township High, where he was a star catcher, receiving the Chicago Tribune's Statewide Certificate of Merit of selection as a Member of the League All-Star Baseball Squad and attracting the attention of several major league baseball teams.
Following high school graduation, he attended Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, where he received an associate degree and then transferred to the University of Missouri, Columbia. While there he was drafted by the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was accepted into the Drill Sergeant Program in the U.S. Army Reserves, where he attained the rank of E-7 after seven years of service. Since his studies were disrupted by the War, he finished his education at Roosevelt University in Chicago, graduating with a BS degree.
He met his devoted wife, Carol, in high school, remaining together for the next 63 years and recently celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary. During that time, they made the bold move to California after a cold snap of wind chills of 77 degrees below zero. They settled in Moraga in 1978 and have been there ever since. Missing Lake Michigan, they found water in 1979 in the up and coming boating community of Discovery Bay on the California Delta. There they have maintained a home and met another community of friends and boaters.
In 1994, Carol and Larry founded Scientific Symposiums International, a continuing medical education company for physicians and other medical practitioners. For more than three decades, their work has taken them to beautiful places, including Hawaii, Alaska, South Carolina, Georgia and San Diego. Along the way, they have built another community of educators and lifelong friends and colleagues. Larry took particular pride in building and running the business alongside Carol, creating a lasting legacy together. Larry and Carol were also members of the Lamorinda Wine Growers Association. They produced wine under the label Rheem Valley Vineyard, enjoying their wine with family and friends.
Larry was an enthusiastic tennis player at the Moraga Country Club and later joined Jerry's Guys, a group of equally enthusiastic players at the Country Club. An avid and life-long Green Bay Packer fan, Larry was a man, whose warmth and humor left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Above all he treasured time with his family, especially his grandsons, Ryan and Tyler. Larry spent countless hours coaching Moraga teams in soccer, basketball and softball and he never missed an opportunity to play endless tennis with his daughter, Maren. On Friday nights he and Carol could be found at the Discovery Yacht Club dancing and enjoying friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol; His loving daughter, Maren Kelly and her husband, John; his treasured grandsons, Ryan and Tyler; his brother, Mel Haag (Maureen) and his sister, Karen Fritts (Tom); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy Miller and Melvin Haag. Larry leaves behind many faithful friends and a loving family who are grateful to have known him and to have loved and to have laughed with him. He will be greatly missed.
A funeral service will be held at Oakmont Mortuary in Lafayette, California, at 11 am on May 23, 2025.
