Loving Memory of Lawrence Walker McConnell
December 1, 1943 – July 23, 2025
Born in Chicago, Illinois
Resident of Winchester, Kentucky
Lawrence "Larry" McConnell, 81, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of connection, quiet humor, and gentle compassion.
A proud Father and Marine Reserve veteran, Larry brought dedication and grit to everything he did. He was a hard worker throughout much of his life-focused, determined, and always in motion. While he may not have always worn his heart on his sleeve, he cared deeply and carried a quiet pride in his family and in the life he built.
Larry had a gift for conversation. Whether at the grocery store, on a front porch, or out on a walk, he was quick to strike up a chat-curious about where people came from and always ready to share a story. One of his greatest comforts came from the company of animals. A lifelong animal lover, Larry had an unshakable tenderness toward all living animals.
He is survived by his daughters, Heather McConnell, Tamara Smither, and Mandy (Bennie) Perkins; his grandchildren, Bobby Smither, Jaqueline (Justin) Jones, Jonathan Smither, Gabe Perkins, and Lyndsey (Chaise) Wainscott; and his brother, Malcolm (Glennis) McConnell. He also leaves behind a community of neighbors and friends who became like family to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth McConnell; his sister, Molly Adams; his son, Stewart McConnell; and his son-in-law, Breck Smither.
Funeral services will be held at Ware Funeral Home on Sunday, August 3, 2025. Visitation will take place from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, with services immediately following. Larry will be laid to rest at Battle Grove Cemetery, beside his beloved son, Stewart.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Lexington Humane Society in his memory.
