Leigh B. Sportun, 83, of DeKalb, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 4, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born on December 16, 1941, the son of Lowell and Ethel (Shallcross) Johnson in Chicago.
Leigh graduated from Carl Schurz High School in Chicago. Immediately following high school he joined the Army, serving from 1959-63. Leigh was stationed for a majority of his enlistment at Fort Richardson in Alaska. After the service, he headed back to Chicago and began a plumbing apprenticeship. As it turned out plumbing was not his forte, he found his true calling as an electrician. One of his proudest work accomplishments was building the main switchboards for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA).
In 1978, Leigh and his wife Alice decided to move their expanding family from Chicago to the tiny farming community of Hampshire. With the help of his brother Frank, they built their family home.
In retirement Leigh enjoyed owning & operating a construction business, focusing on finished basements and other home repair projects. He nurtured a lifelong love of deer-hunting and fishing with his sons and grandchildren.
He is survived by his children, Christopher (Donna) Sportun, Allen Sportun, Amy (Bernard) Carlo, and Sara (Dianna Driscoll) Sportun; grandchildren, Isaac, Lily, Riley, Avery, Will, and Grace; sister, Janeann Peelle; ex-wife Alice, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Lisa Sportun, sister, Sybilla Prince; & brother, Frank Haubold.
Visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, May 15th at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 297 E. Jefferson Ave. in Hampshire. Burial will follow in the St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Society of St. Vincent dePaul, 297 E. Jefferson Ave. Hampshire, IL 60140
