Leo Dean "Kmo Wa" Mitchell, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on December 18, 2024, at the age of 66. Born to Alberta Nagmo Wamego of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and Melvin Twin of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, Leo navigated the challenges of his time with resilience, intelligence, and a smile that could brighten any room.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Leo's service was cut short by a medical discharge. Before his time in the Air Force, Leo excelled as a standout track athlete at Royal Valley High School, where his intelligence and athleticism set him apart. He broke numerous school records, many of which stood for years. Despite the lasting effects of the Indian boarding school system and growing up in an era with limited opportunities, Leo persevered. Leo was a member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.
Leo faced and overcame immense challenges in his life. He battled mental illness and addiction, ultimately achieving more than 25 years of sobriety-a testament to his strength and determination. During these years, he cultivated deep and meaningful relationships with his family, spending countless cherished hours with his sisters, nieces, and nephews, but especially with his sister Jackie, whose bond with him was unwavering and full of love.
Leo is survived by his siblings Eddie Joe Mitchell, Jackie Mitchell, Randy Mitchell, Lisa Wamego, and Edie Wamego; his adopted mother Judy Wabaunsee; his adopted brothers Mando Evans, Don Don LeClere, and Kabot Hale; and his many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alberta Nagmo Wamego and Melvin Twin; his stepfather Algernon Wamego; his daughter, Verinna Mitchell; and his siblings Larry Mitchell, Gary Mitchell, Andrew "Bubs" Mitchell, Shirlene Seymour, Sandra Mitchell, and Michael Wamego.
A supper and wake will be held on Friday, December 20, 2024 at the Dance Grounds. Burial will take place 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 21st at Takahko Cemetery near his family's homeplace. Military Honors by We-Ta-Se Post 410.
Leo's legacy is one of courage, resilience, and an enduring spirit. He will be remembered for his killer smile, sharp mind, and the love he shared with his family and friends.
Leo will lie in state from Noon to 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton before going to the Dance Grounds.
