Leon Aubrey Hundley, 94, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 18, 2025, entering into eternal rest with the Lord.
Born on June 6, 1931, in Westmoreland County, Virginia, Leon was the beloved son of the late John and Helen Hundley. He was raised in the scenic Northern Neck alongside his six siblings, a place that would always hold a special place in his heart.
From a young age, Leon felt a strong calling to serve his country. He proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, an experience that shaped his life and remained a source of deep pride long after his service ended. After his time in the service, he spent more than 30 years working at NSWC - Dahlgren.
Leon met the love of his life, Margaret Causey, and the two were married on January 1, 1952, when he was 20 and she was 18. Together, they made their home in Montross, Virginia, where they raised their two children, Teresa and Lonnie and built a life filled with love, family, and community.
Leon was widely known for his warmth, charisma, and captivating storytelling. His life experiences-many of which were shared over gatherings with family and friends-were told with such spirit that they left a lasting impression on all who listened. One of his greatest joys was being near the water, especially the rivers of the Northern Neck. He cherished every chance to go fishing, particularly when it meant spending time with loved ones.
A proud veteran, Leon remained actively involved with the American Legion Post 252, where he once served as Commander. His dedication to service, both in the military and his community, reflected his generous and loyal spirit.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret; his beloved son, Leon A. Hundley, Jr.; and his siblings: Edward Hundley, Horace Hundley, Norman Hundley, Norma C. Robinson, and Grace Edmondston
He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Teresa H. Davis (Steven) of Montross; seven grandchildren: Leon A. Hundley III, Christopher C. Hundley, Hillary Hundley, Jessica N. Perry, Emily F. Gorey, Zoe E. Ingram, and John Peacock; his great-grandchildren: Christopher Hundley, Noah Hundley, Isaac Hundley, Jane Hundley, Isabella Brown, Kalysta Brown, Mageldine Perry, Jake Hundley, Chad Gorey, Cassandra Gorey, Erik Gorey, and Theodore Ingram; great-great-grandchildren: Leon and Axel; and his sister, Mary Ann Foxwell (Albert) of Mechanicsville.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 25, 2025, at Welch Funeral Home – Montross Chapel. Visitation with family and friends will begin at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. James Episcopal Church Cemetery in Tidwells. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. James Episcopal Cemetery Fund – Cople Parish.
