Lois Ann (Kack) Fales was a woman whose joy, kindness, and laughter touched everyone she met. Born the fifth of seven children to Laverne and Alice Kack on December 10, 1957, Lois grew up on a farm near Minneota, Minnesota. The energy of her busy childhood home stayed with her throughout her life, filling her heart with warmth and love for those around her. Her love for baking, a skill passed down from her mother, Alice, was one of the many ways Lois shared her heart with others.
Cheerful, optimistic, and always ready for a good conversation, Lois could brighten any room she entered. She had an infectious laugh. It was never hard to convince her to play a game of cards or take a drive to check on the crops. She had a gift for making everyday moments feel special-like her "quick" trips to the store, which always turned into a chance to catch up with friends and neighbors. Her favorite expression, "Thank you, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph," would often spill out in celebration of someone else's happiness, a reflection of her constant encouragement and support for others.
Lois graduated from Canby High School in 1976, and married her high school sweetheart, Lowell, on June 26, 1976. Early in their marriage, she worked at Jim's Market and spoke fondly of the fun she had during those years. When her youngest daughter began preschool, Lois went back to school herself, earning an associate degree in accounting from Minnesota West. Lois went on to work at Sanford Hospital for many years before transitioning to Sunset Assisted Living, where she found deep fulfillment in serving the residents. She later worked at US Bank in Marshall until her retirement in 2022.
Lois' most cherished role was always that of a mother. The love she poured into her family was unmatched, and her gifts of laughter, guidance, and affection were her true legacy. Family was everything to Lois-she made sure to teach her children the importance of love, honesty, humility, and living a faith-filled life. Becoming a grandmother brought her added joy. She embraced imaginative play, spent afternoons at the pool, and cheered on her grandkids at school events, making memories they would carry with them forever.
When Lois and Lowell moved to town in 2000, their home quickly became a gathering place for family and friends. Whether sitting on the front porch or in a circle of lawn chairs on the front lawn, Lois was happiest when surrounded by loved ones. There was always food, snacks, and plenty of conversation, with Lois at the center-her deep brown eyes and dimples framed by a smile that would make anyone feel welcome and loved.
After retiring, Lois' travel bug took flight. Whether flying to the beaches of Cumberland Island and Savannah, exploring the mountains of Tennessee, or visiting Asheville, NC, she enjoyed every adventure. But her heart always returned to her happy place: the Florida beaches, where she and Lowell would return to-enjoying peace-filled sunsets together. Even in retirement, Lois' life was a reflection of her joyful spirit-always moving, always loving, and always making memories.
Lois' final words each night were simple, yet profound: "Good night, love you, see you in the morning." Those words capture the essence of Lois-a woman whose love, laughter, and light will continue to inspire and uplift all who knew her.
Lois met her illness head on with grace. She passed away peacefully at the age of 67 in Sioux Falls, SD, at Avera McKennan hospital surrounded by her family. She will be missed by her husband of 49 years Lowell Fales, Canby; her daughters: Angie (Mike) Monnet, Marshall, MN, Michelle (Dan) Person, Marshall, MN, Jodi (Joey) Smith, Plymouth, MN; four grandchildren: Ashlynn, McKenzie, Brayden and Devan Monnet; siblings: Diane (Dale) Warholm, Paulette (John) Guiliano, Randal (Doran) Kack, and Glen Kack; brothers and sisters-in-law: Lyle (Jean) Fales, Loren (Laurie) Fales, Leon Fales, Larry (Robin) Fales, Lori (Dan) Drietz, Vicky Fales, and Randy Fales; and many nieces and nephews.
She was excited to be reunited with her parents Laverne and Alice Kack, brothers Ron and Bob Kack, sister-in-law Linda Fales, Lowell's parents Lionel and Tootsie Fales and to walk her grand dogs Koda and Tucker.
The battle is over; the victory of eternal life is won!
