Funeral services for Louelle Y. Smith, age 98, of Daviston (Mountain Community) will be held on Thursday July 17, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville with Rev. Don Peterson and Rev. Randy Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethany Cemetery.
Louelle was born in Tallapoosa County in a home on what is now Old Providence Road just north of Hackneyville. She spent most of her youth in Clay County with her parents though her family moved to Alexander City for work in Russell Mills. At the age of 17, Louelle married Noel Ezra Smith from the Mountain Community located in southern Clay County. There she remained for the remainder of her life.
Louelle was preceded in death by her husband, Noel Smith. At the time of his death in 2006, they celebrated almost 63 years of marriage. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Thomas Jefferson Yates and Pearlie Ethyl (Peters) Yates, and all of her siblings including three brothers and three sisters, Rev Hurshel Yates, Oneal Yates, Thomas Yates, Irene Harris, Laverne Parrish and Alline Scott.
She is survived by two sons, Johnny Lamar Smith and Jimmie David Smith, her daughter-in-law, Mary Smith, and two grandchildren, Nick Smith and Ashley Smith.
Louelle was a wonderful mother and wife. Throughout her life she was a loving, kindhearted soul. She was tender-hearted when it came to those in need. But she truly had a soft spot for children and was a regular supporter of St. Jude Children's Hospital, March of Dimes, Covenant House, and Shriners' Hospitals for Children.
The were many interests that kept her busy over the years. She loved gardening and canning the vegetables grown in the family garden as well as those given to her by family and friends. Though she worked for many years at Russell Mills, and later Southland Manufacturing, there were always things to do besides work. She found time for knitting and crocheting, everything from tabletop doilies to bedspreads. She would work on her crafts for countless hours. Her husband would look on in horror as she unraveled hours of crocheting because she found where she had dropped a stitch. Not necessarily a perfectionist, but she wanted things done right.
As years passed, the progression of age affected her abilities and therefore influenced her interests. She enjoyed simple things like growing flowers and flowering shrubs. And of course, all the blooms attracted hummingbirds and butterflies, both of which she loved to watch and nurture. Cooking was also a major interest. Nothing fancy, but she always made certain that meals were ready for her family. And we'll never forget holidays with a table full of cakes. She enjoyed collecting and sharing recipes. She was able to introduce her grandchildren to the art of making biscuits. In later years she would complain that her biscuits just weren't as smooth as they used to be. But the few cracks and crevasses on the face of her biscuits only added character to their looks. The taste was always delicious.
Louelle was a woman of many interests that evolved through the years. Through it all, she remained the warm, caring person experienced by all who met her. Her departure from this life leaves a void that can never be filled. Her passing is this world's loss, but Heaven's gain.
Active pallbearers will be Junior Parker, Chris Parker, Rodney Cheaney, Glenn Kennedy, Ronnie Glenn and Lynn Griffin.
Visitation will be Wednesday July 16th from 5:30pm to 7:00pm and Thursday before the service.
