Lowell Seymour, 86, passed away on July 11, 2025, at the Goodhue Senior Living Center in Goodhue, MN. Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge, SD is in charge of the arrangements. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 22 at 11 a.m. at the Pollock Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Lowell Albert Seymour was born May 7, 1939, to Albert Phelps Seymour, Jr. and Martha Wittmeier Seymour in the town of old Pollock, SD. He was baptized in 1939 at the Pollock Memorial Presbyterian Church and confirmed in 1953.
He lived on the family farm/ranch in Emmons County, ND and attended rural school for eight years. He graduated in 1955 from eighth grade and from Pollock High School in 1957. He joined the Army National Guard while in high school and served as a truck driver. Later he joined a New Jersey chemical unit and was honorably discharged in 1964.
Lowell attended Northern State College for 1 ½ years, Hope College for 2 years and graduated in 1961 with a biology and chemistry degree. Leona Jansen and Lowell were married on April 19, 1962. He then earned his master's degree in 1966 from Montclair State, NJ and doctorate in 1970 from Temple University.
Lowell worked as a science teacher in New Jersey high schools. He taught at Temple University, was a research associate for Philadelphia schools, and taught science at Akiba Hebrew Academy. He worked at the Midcontinent Regional Education Laboratory in Kansas City, MO, published articles, and co-authored a book for science teachers. He also owned and operated a small ranch in Kansas.
Upon the death of his brother, Albert Chris, he took over ownership of the family farm in North Dakota. He also taught science in North and South Dakota schools and University of Mary in Bismarck, ND. He was a co-owner of the Fin-n-Feather Supper Club and an Emmons County, ND commissioner.
His wife, Leona, died in 1980 of cancer. He later married Gladys Nieuwsma Dornbush, who died in 2013. Lowell married Mary Lee Cedar Hall in 2014. They lived in Arizona and South Dakota. In 2022, they resided with Jon Seymour in Zumbrota, MN for a short time. They then moved into the assisted living facility, Goodhue Living, in Goodhue, MN.
Lowell was predeceased by wives Leona Jansen Seymour and Gladys Dornbush Seymour, grandchild Brandon David Seymour, parents Albert and Martha Seymour, brother Albert Chris Seymour, sisters Kathy Rowerdink and Mary Ryckman, brother-in-law Harold Ryckman and sisters-in-law Ann Seymour, Alyda (Frank) Calamita, Fran (Bill) Kight, and Geraldine DeBoer.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lee Hall Seymour, children David (Lisa) Seymour, Kathy (Rob) Tozier and Jon (Christa) Seymour, grandchildren Justin (Talitha) Seymour, Tasha Seymour, Martha Anne (Timothy) Tozier Ahn, Philip Tozier, Olivia Leona Seymour, Madeline Grace Seymour, Gavin Jonathan Seymour, and great grandchild, Weston David Seymour, brother Les (Kay) Seymour and brothers-in-law John Rowerdink and Bob DeBoer.
Lowell donated his body to science at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. His ashes will be buried in the Cedar Lawn Cemetery in New Jersey and Dale Cemetery in North Dakota.
