Mrs. Madeline Hammer Tanner, 91, went home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and is "together again" with her beloved husband of sixty-one years, Robert W. Tanner, Sr. Her sisters and brothers, Nancy Boyd, Melvin Hammer, Peggy Haley, Doug Hammer, Brenda Robinson, and Kenneth Hammer preceded her in death.
The family will greet friends on Friday, February 21, 2025, at noon at the Midland Valley Community Church of the Nazarene, 3526 Jefferson Davis Highway, Graniteville, South Carolina 29829. A Celebration of Life service at 2 o'clock will follow, with Pastors David Gallimore and Pennye Duncan officiating. Interment will follow in Aiken Memorial Gardens, Aiken, South Carolina.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Deborah Martin (Bill), of Aiken, South Carolina, Kimberly McCormick (Tom), of Fort Mill, South Carolina, and Robin Fulmer (Steve) and Robert Wesley Tanner, Jr. (Melissa), all of North Augusta, South Carolina; two sisters, Vicky Elliott (Brett), of Shelby, North Carolina, and Martha Morrison (Bobby), of Concord, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Daniel Martin, Adam Martin, Kyle Hughes, and Brayden Tanner and one great-grandchild, Kayelin Hughes.
Mrs. Tanner was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, to the late Millard Thurmond and Laura Kathleen Hill Hammer. She retired from the loan department of Farmers and Merchants Bank in Aiken, South Carolina, in 1990 with sixteen years of service. For years, she made wedding cakes out of her delicious pound cake.
Madeline has been a Midland Valley Community Church of the Nazarene member since 1952. She was the head greeter at the church. Many members said that her sweet smile and genuine greeting, followed by her heartfelt, handwritten thank-you note, compelled them to join the church. Her smile and sense of humor drew people to her, and many times, you could find her praying with a stranger in the grocery store. She was a prayer warrior. Madeline had the innate ability to carry people's burdens and take them to the Lord in prayer.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the medical assistants and caregivers at Barclay House and Gentiva Hospice for their kindness, support, and care of Madeline.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Midland Valley Community Church of the Nazarene building Fund in her memory.
