A Fairfield resident, Mae Louise "Mazie" Elder, born on March 14, 1937, passed away peacefully at her home on January 16, 2025 surrounded by her family.
Mazie was a graduate of Mt. Washington High School, Class of 1955. The following year, she married James Spalding Elder beginning a beautiful journey together that spanned nearly six decades. Their marriage was a testament to love and devotion as they celebrated 59 wonderful years together before James' passing. She dedicated her professional life to serving others as a medical assistant. Mazie joined the Bloomfield medical office, where she worked for 40 years. Her unwavering commitment to her work and her community was evident throughout her career until her retirement at the age of 70. A devoted member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, she was deeply loved by her community and friends. Her warmth, kindness, and generosity touched all who knew her, leaving behind a legacy of love and faith that will be remembered for generations. She loved singing in the St. Michael's choir, gardening, home decorating, shopping, but especially spending time with family and friends.
Mazie is preceded in death by her beloved husband James Elder; daughter Virginia Katherine; parents Caperton and Gladys Harris; sister Fay Vowell; and her brother James Hill Harris. She is survived by seven children: David (Margaret) Elder, Dawn (Wally) Bowling, Doug (Lisa) Elder, Danette "Cookie" (David) Barnes, Dee Ann (Joe) Crush, Kim (Steve) Hile, and Beth (David) Neltner. She also leaves behind a loving family of 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her siblings, Betty Harris and Norval Lee Harris. Mazie's life was one filled with love, service, and faith. May her memory bring comfort and peace to all whose lives she touched so deeply.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Mae Louise "Mazie" Elder will be celebrated Monday, January 20, 2025 at 11:00 am, at St. Michael's The Archangel Catholic Church. Father Kirby Rust celebrant, interment will be in St. Michael's Catholic Church Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church after 9:00 am Monday until the time of mass. The family would like to give a special thanks to Hospice of Nelson County for their care. The family requests expression of sympathy take the form of contributions to St. Michael's Choir or St. Michael's Bereavement Committee. The Houghlin Funeral Home in Bloomfield is in charge of the arrangements.
