Marianne Alice Schmid (ne e Martinka), 91, of Shakopee, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025.

She was born to Alphonse and Marie Martinka on March 22, 1934, in New Ulm, Minnesota. She graduated from New Ulm High School in 1952 and the College of St. Catherine in 1955 before marrying her childhood sweetheart, Connie Schmid, on December 27, 1955. She worked as a medical technologist and later in life volunteered at St. Francis Hospital for many years.

In her youth, Marianne was a competitive diver–taking first place at state for her high board swan dive. She also loved swimming and tennis, enjoying both throughout her life; constantly keeping busy with Connie, family, and friends at her "happy place," the cabin on Green Lake in Spicer, Minnesota.

Marianne was renowned for her sweet tooth. In her kitchen, the counter was always full of homemade cookies, bars, and cakes - anything with chocolate! You could always count on seeing Marianne at the cabin with a grandbaby in her arms - usually while reaching for a cookie!

Above all, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who enjoyed nothing more than playing cards and games with her husband, family, and many friends. Marianne also told it like she saw it. Her candor and take-charge attitude made her a force to be reckoned with all the way up to the end. More than anything, she lived life guided by the best of values - commitment, devotion, faith, determination, and a love for the simple joys shared with her family and many friends.

She is survived by the love of her life, Connie Schmid, her husband of 69 years; her children, Laura Behrendt (Ken), Ann Marie Brown (Corey), Michael Schmid (Lesley), Daniel Schmid (Renee), Christine Thomas (Todd), and Rebecca Hauth-Schmid (Eric); sixteen grandchildren (Brendan, Rachele, Janell, Nadine, Colin, Samuel, Leah, Robert, Matthew, Alexandra, Thomas, Julianna, Jacob, Conor, Eleanor, and Eamon); and eleven (and counting!) great-grandchildren.

She spent her final days, as she had her life, surrounded by those she loved and those who loved her, never losing her unwavering independent spirit and determination. She will be greatly missed by all lucky enough to have her in their life.

Marianne was especially close to her late brother, Father Stan Martinka, supporting him in his many ventures throughout life. His final venture was starting San Alfonso Mission in Juarez, Mexico–for which she hosted many clergy in efforts to teach them English. Memorials in her honor may be made to San Alfonso Mission in Juarez, Mexico (11752 Glencoe Circle, Thornton, CO 80233).

Visitation Tuesday, August 12, 2025, from 9:30-11 AM, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM, all at Church of St. Mark, 350 Atwood St. South, Shakopee. Interment Catholic Cemetery, Shakopee.
